One of my favorite places in NYC. The battery is only open from April to November, Saturday and Sunday from 12pm to 4pm or by appointment. But the rest is open all year. Usually, the park is pretty empty even in summer, so the walks are quiet. There are some of the old houses that have been renovated and are being used by EMT, some others are empty and some that are covered in growing green! Some areas feel like ghost towns, check the kids playground all the way in the back, its all full of rust, it looks like from a horror movie. Theres a lot of military and EMT personnel around, but if you are not doing anything wrong, nobody will bother you. The places that are restricted are marked. Check the urban park rangers calendars as there are some interesting events available. From time to time they have a star gazing event, considering you are still in NYC, the night sky is pretty OK, you wont see the milky way, but it is a nice activity. The parking lot is open again with plenty of space.

This is a hidden gem of Northern Queens. Admission is free so there is no excuse not to visit. Inside the park you have the Bayside Historical Society (which is designed like a miniature castle), The Fort Totten Battery (which is an uncompleted yet preserved battery overlooking the Long Island Sound), a few baseball and soccer fields, a playground for kids and a pool. The grounds are also occupied by the NYC FDNY and EMS. There are a lot of buildings from the 1800s to early 1900s that they are in the process of preserving. Lots of activities are provided by the Bayside Historical Society through out the year. You are encouraged to check out their website events page for activities such as Haunted Walks, Pumpkin Patch, Oktoberfest, Holiday decorating, Civil War reenactments and photographers will love the view. Something the whole family will enjoy.

Very nice park out near the throgs neck bridge. what is a throgs neck anyway? is it the neck of the throg? or multiple throgs together and this forms their neck? I once heard that the throg was an ancient giraffe-like creature that prowled the shores and would reach its long neck across the water to eat from the trees on the other side that grew grayberries. While it would feed, people would walk across the neck. Eventually all the throgs were killed for their long bones to make tents and when the new bridge was built they named it after it. But it could also be the other multiple throg option.

Amazing park. There are old houses that are scattered throughout the park other kinds of buildings that have a great architecture. It has that old colonial feel from the earlier days in America. The waterfront view is also beautiful to look at. Great park for biking, walking, and even baseball. Lots of government agencies are also located in the fort area, for example the FDNY, NYPD and the US Army all have a presence there. Too bad the actual fort infrastructure of the park is closed, but you can still see a lot of it from the outside of it.

Great park use to be better before they changed but it does look a lot nicer. The park extends all the way to the end of the highway, you can go into the actual Fort, but you have to leave your car and walk inside. You can go fishing during the summer on the rocks or along the coast. You can even park there until 9:30pm its always nice during the summer cool breeze :) The view of the bridge is nice and matter of fact if your every hungry you can sometimes ask the nearest pizzeria to deliver and theyll do it sometimes.

Used to be such a good local park for jogging, meditation or just enjoying nature.. It has unfortunately become so crowded with a very undesirable crowd. People are not picking up after themselves especially those who picnic or have social events. I. E. Birthday parties, graduation parties and so on. Isnt it wonderful to have the opportunity to enjoy this wonderful park and all it offers for absolutely free. It shouldnt be too much to ask to have it remain clean!

Clean, friendly, nice, good for kids of all ages. Just have a lock with you and ... come early. It is one of the smaller free pools, but it is way better than any other I have been to. And sometimes you need to wait in line to get in and changing rooms are not very useful, but otherwise worth going to. A bit of a walk from the parking area, but parking is always available and free too.

Beautiful scenery, nice buildings, and relaxing fields. Apparently you can take your pets here, which is cool. Most of the buildings are used by the city or just closed so dont expect to go exploring and the Visitor Center is only open Saturdays and Sundays. Im guessing the Historic Battery is only open those days too because it was closed the weekday I visited.

Great park and worth the trek. I journeyed out here for a guided tour and it was very educational. There are a lot of buildings that are old and falling apart but that just makes this place just a bit more interesting. I would recommend taking the Q16 bus instead of the Q13, youll save about 30 minutes of commuting.

I went with my TaiChi teacher last summer, and found this a great place to be. We stayed here for about two hours and told k a lot of pictures. We went into the visitors Center at the Forts entrance. The Fort Totten Park is pretty big, and there is a local fire engine there, and I guess that many people lives there

The renovation to the parking lot and trail area make Fort Totten park a pretty neat place to visit. Theres always a ton of people walking on the rocks and on the sand so its pretty safe. You could park in the new parking lot and walk into Fort Totten if you wanted to walk in a quieter area.

The public pool is one of the best kept secrets in NYC. This is a great spot for lunch along the waterside. Although the the buildings are in serious need of repair, the NYC Parks Dept is slowly making improvements. The views of the Whitestone bridge are perfect for any photobug.

This place is manicured to the top. Clean with lots of green around you. This park has something you rarely see in New York parks - clean bathrooms! Good for biking or running around. Has a baseball field, kids playground and amazing views of the water. Definitely an upscale park.

Great place to escape the crowded streets and take a stroll on the water with a great view of the bridges connecting to the bronx. with nice history behind it. and even the occasional group of Biology students sampling the fish in the waters. you will enjoy the walk to this park.

Gorgeous view of the Brooklyn Bridge and a scary and steepy rock type of pier of sorts? I dont know what it is called but it was fun walking it to get great pics. You have to watch your step though. Wear shoes with proper grips. Dont go there tipsy. Lol

What a beautiful park! I went to the haunted halloween tours that the urban park rangers hosted here. It was so fun - it was amazing to see such camaraderie with all the teenage volunteers all joined in to scare us. Loved it here!
