As the Legends is now back open after new ownership, here is my review and feedback. First, remove the pretentious rock with the plaque play homage to Robert Trent Jones by the first tee. OMG, what the hell? In 1989, the guy was at the twilight of his course design career and was building courses with the sole objective of making them harder than Pete Dyes designs. Which leads me to my review. First of all, the clubhouse is quite nice, as is the pool after being redone last summer. The range is pretty average, and could be made very nice. Service is all around good and the membership is very friendly (just dont say anything bad about the course design). Now to the course review. Bottom line, its too hard for most mid to upper handicap players . If you cant drive the ball consistently straight and carry the ball up to 200 yards from the fairway to green, you will struggle on this course. Part of the problem with the design is that the two worst designed holes are numbers #1 and 2. So right away, I was feeling like this was a hard, goofy course. #1 is a short par 5 (not a bad idea). But standing on the tee, the fairway is tree-lined on both sides and there are two bunkers on each side of the dogleg right. Other than a 280 yard power fade, it is very difficult to picture a shot on the first tee, which is never good on a first tee. #2 is worse. A 360-400 yard par 4 sharp dogleg right with a ditch (not a creek, but a very unattractive ditch) about 200-230 off the tee. Again, the required shot is a 280 yard power fade off the tee. Seeing a pattern here? The other pattern on the first two holes, which repeats consistently all the way to the 18th hole, is RTJs placement of bunkers right in front of the greens. Almost every hole requires a forced carry, regardless of length. The course does get better after the first couple of holes, but again, with all the forced carries, I dont know why mid to high handicaps would become members. So my advice to the new owners? 1. RTJ is dead, so fix the course 2. Remove the bunker on the left side of #1 fairway, replace with some mounds. 3. Fill the ditch on #2, bury a pipe if you need to, and sod it all as fairway. 4. On 4, build up the right side of the rough by the green so every shot to the right doesnt roll in the water. 5. On 6, better identify the creek on the right from the tee. A couple of small trees? 6. On 13, restore the fairway to the left of the creek. 7. On 17, let the grass grow around the creek in front of the green so it is more visible from the fairway Last, and most important: Fill in or move to the side bunkers that are placed directly in front of greens. Holes #1, 3, 9, 10, 14, 15, and 18. It could be a great course, but was designed by RTJ when he was trying to out-difficult Pete Dye. So move on, like the rest of golf course architecture did in the 90s.

This West St Louis County Club & Course is a hidden gem. I attended as part of an invitational golf outing and the course is beautiful, well manicured , with exceptional fairways and greens. The staff are friendly and helpful and the facility including the food were fantastic.
