A restored military outpost...designed to show what life would have been like for some of the first pioneers to settle in MN. They have restored the original buildings that they could and rebuilt the others based on drawings and journals. They also have actors throughout the fort to tell you about life in MN, 1826. If you enjoy old buildings, history, military stories, history of medicine...this should be a place you visit! For a real treat, go on a Sunday and catch the 11 AM mass in the beautifully restored chapel...even if you are not of Christian faith, to see the beauty of the chapel on the inside!

Arrived about 1-1/2 hours before closing, which is not nearly enough time if you love historical places. We were in time for the last demonstration of the firing of the cannon, which was narrated and presented as if you stepped back in time. Also, we got to see the soldiers lower the flag for the day. Both were a great treat. Everyone is genuinely friendly and we had the best time. Very well preserved and things that were replica were done well. I pray I have opportunity to return and spend a full day. This place is perfect for everyone, young to old.

This Google posting is incorrect for Memorial Day. Historic Fort Snelling is generally closed on Mondays during the summer season, but is open on the Monday holidays of Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day. Come and join us for some spectacular events and the best in "Living History" education about our states and countrys past. We know who we are and where were going by knowing who we were and where weve been!

Fort snelling is an amazing place to spend an afternoon. They have employees in Period clothes all around the fort that know a lot about how life was back then. It is one of the most open (as in you can touch a lot). They also have almost all the rooms in the barracks and house open so that you can walk into them. Yard games were set out to play, you could use a wash board also. It was a great time!

Great place to browse around on a nice sunny day, and learn about the history of Minnesota. Lots of interesting exhibits, historical artifacts, and very friendly historically dressed volunteers and staff ready to answer questions and give you a little more insight into the historical significance of the Fort.

We had read it would take about 45 minutes to visit. However, we were there for 2 hours and still didnt see everything. Beautiful views, educational information. Most of it is outdoors but shaded area are available. We will definitely be going back soon.

“Re-enactment days are special” A great historical resource year round, it is especially fun and educational during special events when re-enactments add to the historical experience of being at an important Minnesota history icon.

They dont have many things to show you so the entire time its just different people telling the same story but daughter longer, shorter, boring, or catastrophically lame. But the characters are nice and the site is beautiful!

The staff here is ever well educated. I took my stepdad here for Fathers Day or his birthday, and he loved it. This is probably not a repeat visit, but it is definitely worth a lengthy one-time visit.

My father took me there , about 65 years ago. He had 3 hitches in the Calvary there. I dont know if it was active when he took me there or not.It seems like it was active, but maybe it wasnt.

Ive been here quite a few times, and its always fascinating to me. I think most people would have a good time and enjoy the stories, building, and antiques/relics they have to show.

I have taken my kids a couple of times, worth learn about the history of the area. People in costumes make it fun and easier to imagine what it was to live back then in the Fort.

A beautiful setting to explore with a kiddo. A lot of history, some of which can be tough to talk about, but the scenery and the workout are great.
