I just returned from a bachelor party with 12 guys this weekend at Sugar Lake Lodge at it was outstanding! After speaking with several golf resorts around the state, Chris Brown at Sugar Lake was hands down the most helpful and accommodating while trying to coordinate this event. The entire staff was helpful, friendly and attentive. They went out of their way to make sure we were had everything we needed and did not harass us for having a good time. The golf was great, the course is a great mix of easy and challenging holes that allowed all skills levels in our group to have a fun round. Food was delicious! Great breakfast buffet and the dinner was excellent too. The lake is beautiful- Water is crystal clear and the beach is very clean. The lodging was great. We were able to have an entire townhome complex to ourselves and did not have to worry about making noise or bothering others at the resort. Each unit had it own kitchen which is much nicer than buying ice for coolers all weekend. I will definitely return to this lodge!

This was our thrid time at Sugar Lake, but the first time in the winter. It was very relaxing. The staff is polite, the service is good, the food is good. Its a nice winter get away. In the summer the lake is amazing. Highly recommend it! The reason I am reviewing today is one particular staff person was outstanding. We bought two cheap sleds on our way up. We couldnt find them Sunday at checkout. I asked at the desk. I said, "no big deal, they were cheap". They said, "we have a bunch here, told me where they were and told me to take 2 of the "best sleds" home for my boys. I know its a silly thing. But what a great thing! It left a great impression. I love seeing excellent customer service in an era where many have lost that art. Thanks! Will Anderson

This will be my 10th year in a row coming up to Sugar Lake Lodge for a group golf weekend. I cannot say enough great things about the resort and the staff. I have been bringing 36 guys to Sugar Lake and we have had nothing but great experiences there every year. The accommodations are great, staying in cabins/townhouses right on the golf course. The golf course is a lot of fun and kept in good condition. The food at the resort is excellent. Working with Chris Brown has been a pleasure and has made planning this larger group event as painless as possible. The rest of the resort staff has been excellent as well. This place is a hidden gem and I am excited to be bringing my family here for the first time this year for a separate summer vacation.

In August 2010 I was traveling through Duluth after a long long wet motorcycle ride. After a long ride and no room available in Duluth a clerk recommended Ruttgers Sugar Lake Lodge. It was a ways out of town but a short ride I wont regret. The facilities were very good, the clerk at the check-in counter was very polite and helpful. The bar staff in the golf club house were so accommodating even though the kitchen was closed they still managed to make me a very good meal. And friendly the nicest two ladies I have ever come across in my travels. Thank you so much................Rene

Spent 2 nights in a Townhouse during my kids Lacrosse tournament. The place was pretty nice as far as accomodations. Things in the townhouse showed a little bit of wear and tear, but not bad. Only substantial issue was the mattress...way too many hours of use on this old mattress...sagging in the middle, which made for a couple of nights of lousy sleep. At $170.00 a night, it would be nice to have a decent bed. Really convenient having the Lacrosse games right outside the room, but will probably get a room in town next year so I can get a good nights sleep.

Smokers paradise. Everywhere you go you have to pass through clouds of cigarette or cigar smoke. You cant enjoy a single deck anywhere without inhaling smoke. The front desk seems more interested in reading books than they are in guest satisfaction. The rooms need a through cleaning. There are cobwebs hanging everywhere and many if the light bulbs are burnt out. Overall it is a beautiful location but the experience has been marred by poor customer service and a lack of a smoking policy.

We just had our wedding there last weekend and it was perfect! They were SO helpful before, during and after our wedding! My husband and I decided to book a last minute extra night at the resort and they were VERY accommodating! ALL of the staff we worked with were VERY professional, the food for the wedding was raved about by all of our guests, and I would HIGHLY recommend this place for ANY wedding! It was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT! <3

We booked this as one of our timeshare vacations, the place looks like it should be wonderful, however we came in Sept and was told everything was closed and we were told "you timeshare people need to go to Grand Rapids for anything you need" the lady at the desk was nice but the owner/manager was arrogant and very unaccommodating, there are plenty of other resorts in the area that I am sure are better

Our good friends, my husband, and I played and stayed for 3 days and 2 nights last week. The accommodations were clean and comfortable, the golf course was in great shape, the food was wonderful and above all, the service was AWESOME! Because of all these things our little last minute golf outing turned out to be one of the highlights of our summer. Thank you to everyone.

I attended there for a convention. It was ok. The building I was in was the last one on the road as you leave. I was all alone and very uncomfortable. The Internet did not reach out there and I had to drive each day to the convention center. The food was good, the room clean. No time for play.

Great place for a group get together! Fun bar and golf course. Really good food and the views are beautiful. The lake has about 5 different shades of blue, its so pretty. The staff was all really friendly and the kids loved the new big screens in the townhomes. We will definitely be back!!
