Every course has pros and cons. If youre a single digit handicap, the challenge lies in the elevation changes, the long par 3s, and the greens arent too easy to hit. In the past, the greenskeepers have done a pretty good job keeping them rolling at around an 8-9, but early in the season its a struggle. For the average or beginner golfer, this course will be fun. Pace of play is slow (especially after noon), so you wont have players breathing down your back. Its not a short course, so youll get familiar with your driver by the end of the first nine. This was my home course 30+ years ago, but Im not letting that affect my review. I rated this course kinda low because 2 reasons: first, the starter doesnt encourage players to pair up and make foursomes (which would greatly speed up play) and second, beginners hit a lot of wayward shots. Combine that with sparse trees and unprotected tee boxes, and you can imagine the perfect storm.

2016: This is the closest 18 hole golf course near my house and has a lot of potential to be great, but Vargo does a poor job of maintaining the place. I think their contract expires this November. Hopefully someone new wins the bid and turns it around. Its still a fine place to try out, but mostly I hear that its overpriced for the quality. Update 2017: Vargo is still the management and the course is still way below full potential. Bunkers have weeds, ant hills, and rocks. Missing bathrooms that used to be there. I had fun playing, but its disappointing. This should be an elite course in the metro Detroit area.

The only 18 hole course In this part of town. It is one of my favorites. Not a cheap course, but compared to the nearest 18 hole courses its priced reasonably. If you arent a single digit handicap, highly recommend playing the white tees. The back 9 plays really long. The pace of play can be pretty slow here, but most public courses are during peak hours. The grass is kept in decent shape considering how many players are out each day. There are better deals to be had if you are willing to drive a little, but I still this think this course is a reasonable value.

Vargo management has let the course deteriorate horribly. Compared to course conditions 3 years ago, Rackham is a disaster. Sand traps unraked, filled with weeds, or completely abandoned. Huge patches of weeds left throughout the property. Dead trees everywhere. Golf carts all had torn seat cushions. The clubhouse was always in poor shape but is now totally sad -- landscaping a mess, bathrooms a mess, old pro shop closed. I paid $30 for 9 holes with a cart and felt robbed. Very sad state for what used to be a nice Donald Ross course.

I play a lot of courses in the metro Detroit area and this course wasnt my favorite. Apparently the norm for courses in the area are at least $39 and it is not worth it; call me cheap. The course was in really rough shape. Fairways had large patches of no grass and the greens are even worse. Bumpy and hairy. I rate based upon the value of the course and this was more expensive and in worse shape then a lot of other courses. $25 is the maximum I wold have paid for this course. I probably wont be back. Bottom line: Drop the price.

its ok-problem is that you can hit the ball all over the place and not be punished-I always say, you can whack em at Rackham-it does have some long holes, the par 3s are long, and the greens are in great shape, and are not easy-I mainly play in the winter when everyplace else is closed, but just cause you can break 90 here, dont let it get to your head-the real way to play this course would be to make anything off the fairways OB-then it would approximate what you would find on a more challenging golf course.

Donald Ross designed this course with the "whack em at Rackham guy" in mind. Try hitting out of this rough... I dare you. The long grass is placed exactly where Ross knows your going to miss-hit, and the greens are extremely difficult. The fairways are wide on certain holes, but I dont see this as making the course easy. Most par 4s you need to think twice about hitting driver and if you do miss the fairway... good luck in the trees, long grass, and bunkers. If you do shoot 90, you played smart golf.

Played Sat 5/10/16 am round. Course is in poor condition (greens are ok). Lots of standing water, unraked/inconsistent bunkers, patches with no grass right in middle of fairways. Course management only doing minimum to run the course. Pace of play was slow, which I asked the ranger and course manager to address but they didnt do anything claiming the pace was acceptable which it wasnt. Just seems like they dont care. Plenty of other courses to choose from.

The course was in good condition. The rangers had nothing better to do than harass the group I was playing with. We were not holding ANYONE up OR hitting into the players in front of us. With their music playing, they drove up on us while we were getting ready to hit/putt multiple times. You are a ranger at a golf course, not a damn police officer. Leave people alone while they are trying to have a relaxing afternoon.

Rackham Golf Course has not been in worse condition since it was a Detroit-owned municipal course. The fairways are horrible---scabby, many areas roped off for repair, not well-maintained at all. There wasnt a single functional ball-washer on the front nine. And for the price (which seems to have gone up a lot just in the last few months), it isnt worth it by a long shot...I will not be back!

I play here 1-2 times per year, and always enjoy the historic clubhouse and that the course was kept in good condition. Today the course was in good shape (only obvious shortcoming was traps could use a little sand), but no water in the coolers or beverage cart on the course. There used to be a grill with hot dogs and chips on the turn but no dogs today. Disappointing because we were hungry.

Set 2 tee times online days on advance for 8 people. Arrived to an extremely overbooked golf course. Multiple groups waiting at the club house because they didnt have carts!! They ended up making us walk the front 9, and we teed off 20 mins late!! Extremely unorganized and staff was terrible at communicating with the customers.

The course is in good condition including the greens. It is tight, so if you whackem left or right you have a good chance of being on someone elses fairway. The green fee is reasonable $39. We teed off early and our cart had not been cleaned, there were cigarette butts in the front compartments.

The pro shop and the ranger, Doug, were very helpful and kind today. The course itself, I would give 4 stars...especially for the price. It is in great shape. The greens are excellent. The golfers out here do not fix their ball marks on the green though. The staff is excellent.

Greens were in bad shape. They were slow and beaten up pretty badly. There was a slow fivesome in front of us with two more slow groups in front of them. No rangers in sight. Terrible course management. Could be a great place but Ive had too many bad experiences there.
