There was a guy from New york that flew all the way to New Orleans to attend the show, people from china and from many other places of the world (I am a Spaniard) we waited 1.1/2 to buy a ticket that you could not get at 16:00hrs when the shop is open (then and there I saw a young man who claimed to be the director). You MUST stand at the side walk like if you pretended to buy a new gadget. Then you are allowed to entry a room of 60 sqft (there were more than 50 people inside, firemen should check the safety conditions) and look over the shoulder of someone else to catch a glimpse of what is going on (fortunaly you are there to listen not to watch). Show began 20 minutes after schedule (a german tourist would have had a heart attack for this lack of "puntlichkeit"). But still there is two more shows to go, so get the heck out cause there are people waiting, so we were treated as sheep: "come on in, in, in.....come on out, out, out", therefore I came out with the rolling stones song in my mind " I cant get no....."(just like a LD without happy ending, if you know what a mean). I would like the head of the director chopped and brought in a silver tray. Why? Are they not good musicians? No. They are the BEST jazz band that I have ever heard. That is why I am so angry. How to solve it? Instead of three shows every day at 15$ make just one at 45$ with a pause of 10 minutes to use a nearby restroom (there is none at the building) and some water or ice tea, so that musicians and public can have time to warm up and enjoy. But of course everybody left with out complaining (including myself cause the "Trumphet man" is in charge and does not where Spain is and I could end up in some mexican airport -no ofense Méjico is beautiful but overseas fly tickets are expensive-). Everybody but a drunk woman (only children a drunk people tell the truth) who argued with a kind receptionist who had no guilt at all. Highly dissapointed. Should you go? YES, because you will not hear Music with that skill level and talent anywhere else. Let me suggest you to attend the last show of the evening, bring a folding chair and something to drink, no kidding, and bear in mind that we paid for 1 hr of show (Jazz, jokes, chatting) and got 38 minutes (4 songs), so spoiling alert...."Coitus interruptus" might occur, Andres A. Lopez-Royo.

This is a tourist trap. The band is solid, but the rest of the experience is basically the equivalent of a vampire tour. Or imagine the Tiki Room at Disneyland but with a real band instead of animatronics. We paid extra for reserved seats ahead of time, and it wasnt really worth it. The set is not so long that you need to sit down. The band started about 6:20 and was done before 7. Five, maybe six songs... and old tradjazz so not that long. Forty bucks per person for that? On top of that, with how many people they shoehorn into the hall, the temperature was unbearable. I thought some people around me were going to pass out. Im acclimated to the weather here and it was uncomfortable for me. I cant imagine what it felt like to people not used to the heat and humidity. In addition, despite many reminders to turn off phones from the band, people kept recording and taking pictures, which caused more verbal warnings from the band, which really took away from the entire experience. No bar inside; bottled water sold. My recommendation: Avoid this show and find a less famous venue to see some traditional jazz.

This place is an institution in this town and the music is TOP NOTCH. I see myself as a bit of a travel afficionado (looking for venues that are inherently part of each locales culture as opposed to "just anouther tourist trap"), and TRUST ME, this place is "the real deal". WARNING: No food, no drink, and seating room is very limited, so get there EARLY. Also, dont expect luxury here, this place is all about the music with its dimly lit stage, one overhead cieling fan, musty wood beams and altogether very small, spartan setup...all I feel which only add to the soul and true charm of the hall itself. Admission is $8, and you can make requests for $2 (General Requests), $5 and $10 (other specialized types of requests). If youre a fan of any type of music and want to hear real musicians offering nothing but pure, you can feel it in the pit of your stomach type jazz, screw the rest and make sure you stop in here.

I used to go to New Orleans, for a week or two, every year from 1994 to 2004; 2 to 3 weeks BEFORE Mardi Gras. That is the perfect time. It is crowded but not too crowded. The weather is cool and usually dry. With a little planning you can get into almost any club or restaurant. This is true with Preservation Hall. I have never seen long lines outside at that time of year, except an occasional Saturday night. You dont mind being crowded inside the small shack-like venue because it is usually cool outside. Be prepared to sit on the floor or stand. I am surprised to hear that they are charging to get in. I never paid, although I always made a voluntary donation and bought albums or tee shirts (I am wearing a Preservation Hall tee shirt now.). Great show. Dont miss it. Just go at the right times (i.e. a week or two before Mardi Gras on a weekday night).

My first time was in 1971 and I remember the name of all those old guys "Kid Thomas Valentine, Sweet Emma Barret, Father Al Louis, Willie and Percy Humphrey and many other!" When Im homesick I use to play their records all day long... I love you all people (during ISAAC I spent most of my time watching your street cams and cooking RED BEANS AND RICE at my best just to to pretend to be near you and your smell and your music of course!) I dont think I shall ever love a place and people more than you! Im going on "spying you" many times a day by your street cams, as always!I couldnt rate facilities and service because they werent available, but everything has been always wonderful all the same.Sorry for my English......
