Unexpected delight. The museum has an interesting collection of gemstone art above ground, and a educational exhibit below ground. The security guard is awesome and made sure we didnt miss the fact that the paintings on the walls were in fact not paintings, but collages made with pieces of stone! We would have totally overlooked the incredible artistry if he hadnt pointed them out, calling attention to the detail in a few where the joins were more visible. It was a really interesting collection with everything from traditional jade carvings to dioramas with realistic baby robins and a slice of petrified wood turned into a giant butterfly. Some of the examples of gemstones on the lower level appeared to be as fine examples of art just from being sliced and polished. Really beautiful examples are on display at the gem of a museum.

All of the staff were so friendly and informative. Even the security guard was approachable and helpful. I had no idea what lapidary was until reading about the museum in one of the tour guide magazines in the hotel. Im soooo glad we popped in. I am shocked that for $5 we were able to see such an extensive collection. There brochure was easy to understand for a novice like me. The museum is well laid out and meticulously clean. I would definitely go back.

Wonderful museum for the price you pay. Rocks and minerals gallore; an amazing gemstone collection. For the amateur geologist a must see. A vast collection of jade carvings from around the world, as well as fossils, meteorites and mineral speicmens. Numerous Roman mosaics are hanging through out the museum. If you have a few hours take a tour through the world of lapidary art.

One of my first true friends was the daughter of the founder. I moved from Minnesota to Illinois and was newly married. We loved the museum and the growth and community participation it provided as our children grew. From this grew an inspiration to also build an Art Museum. That too is now a an integral part of Elmhurst. I recommend both places to anyone of any age.

Extremely knowledgeable staff (even the security officer knew a ton of tidbits about the pieces various provenances) and some genuinely interesting and unique pieces. I loved seeing the blend of art ranging from ancient Chinese reticulated ivory puzzle spheres to modern cameo artists work. Charming little hidden gem of a museum.

Neat place for rock hounds and "normals" alike! This unassuming building in an unassuming suburb holds quite an awesome collection. Two floors of carved rock and minerals. Pay close attention to the items on the wall. They are not paintings, but mosaics! Great place to spend some time on a rainy Chicago afternoon.

Free parking. Free admission on Friday. Wasnt crowded. I think normal admission is $5. Honestly if you live 30 minutes from here you must go. Really cool carvings, info about gems, minerals, and stone. Plenty of items in all price ranges at the gift shop. Just plain cool items to look at.

My entire family loves going here a few times per year. It can be hard to find a place where teens are excited to go with their parents, but this is one of those places! Gems, stones, and beautiful artwork made from them.
