Beauty in Design and Content I’m always amazed at the number of art galleries that are offered for free that we, locals and tourists, fail to take advantage of. Spacious and clean, the Chazen Museum of Art is a treasure tucked away in the downtown area of Madison, Wisconsin. It offers four gallery floors of various works and periods. A gorgeous exhibit titled, Floating World by Karen LaMonte is located in the Rowland Galleries(August 11-September 24, 2017). Life-sized kimonos cast in glass, ceramic, bronze and rusted iron, was a visual feast for the eyes. The pieces, posed as though bodies were in them, present a graceful history in the art of the kimono and the exploration of beauty. The remaining 20,000 pieces in its permanent collection showcases Contemporary Glass and Ceramics, European & American 19th and 20th-Century works, Asian and African to name a few. The art gallery as a whole is beautifully designed, allowing light and space to accentuate its pieces. Overall: Backpacks of any size are not allowed in the museum. Lockers are provided as well as a quarter to use them. The gift shop is located on the main level. This was a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

I cant overstate how impressed I am with the collection. The variety means there is something for everyone: historical artifacts, paintings from many times and places, mixed media, sculptures, even an original Grant Wood. The changing showroom also features artists from around the world, and provides something fresh to repeat visitors. My only complaint is that they make visitors put all of their bags in tiny lockers and then guards will hover near you. I guess they have a lot of valuable art to protect, but other galleries Ive visited have never had such a tense atmosphere.

A couple of weeks ago I had visited this Art Museum, it was my first time here. Very nice museum with a very large collection of a variety of different types of artwork. There are two parts to the museum, the newer addition and the original museum. Allow a couple of hours to see the entire museum and grab a map at the front desk and go exploring. The museum offers different events each month, recommend checking their event calendar for upcoming events. Admission is free. Recommend parking in one of the Parking ramps near the museum.

The Chazen is a beautiful University Art Museum... The UW preserved the existing facility, then built one of equal size with more exciting and functional facilities connected by a sky-bridge. The collection, like many University collections, is eclectic. But its a huge building, with a great diversity of art displayed well. Plus, since it is a public space, it plays host to lots of UW-sponsored activities... Monthly concerts of high calibre, movie series showings, lectures... Its a vital space, and fun to visit.

Went on thurs night. Nothing to do security guard about 6 hanging out at entry. As soon as we walked in, 1 followed us like a maniac. Felt uncomfortable, i came to enjoy art, not to talk to stupid security guards or followed by. Too casualy approached, wheres the professional receptionist? Kind of intimidating. U dont need 6 security gurds at one entrance area!!! Like u think we came to steal the art? Jeez!!

Always interesting exhibitions there. They have a coatroom with lockers. Lockers are 25 cents, but if you dont have a quarter ask the guards are the front desk. They have a cup of quarters specifically for this. (the quarter is returned when to retrieve your stuff - be sure to return the quarter to the community cup!)

This place is a wonderful museum with great and varied collections. There are study rooms where researchers and artists can gather to look in better detail the objects and art pieces through history. There are wonderful views and the architecture is admirable.

From antiquities to very contemporary art, this collection is impressive in its breadth. A permanent collection was complemented, on my visit, with a breathtaking display of Japanese prints on view. Nice gift shop, friendly people. Definitely worth a trip.

For a free museum, the Chazen has a surprisingly good collection. A wide range of styles from classical through contemporary, plus some small exhibits of non-Western art. You can spend several hours here if youd like.
