Very informative museum located on the charming square in Dahlonega. The Yahoola Cherokee Museum is centered around the Cherokee culture and the trail of tears, which originated in Dahlonega. The Cherokee Nation removal in 1838 was brought on by the discovery of gold in Dahlonega, Georgia. The Trail of Tears was a series of forced relocations of Native American nations in the United States following the Indian Removal Act of 1830. The Cherokee suffered from exposure, disease, and starvation while en route, and more than ten thousand died before reaching their various destinations. This museum is operated by local people with Cherokee heritage. Although small and under construction, this Cherokee museum is genuine and authentic and really one of the few tributes to the Cherokee in Dahlonega. This is a great place to bring the kids and a great opportunity for adults to help support local culture.
