Aug. 2013. UWF bought the course, and the new 9 Mile Rd. signage for Scenic Hills GC is impressive so I visited the course recently to see what upgrades had occurred for golfers. It was sad. The practice bunker is filled with a gravel/sand mix that will make the finish on any sand wedge look distressed after only three swings. And of course the practice bunker is located so it’s easy for an errant shot to hit a car in the range parking lot. The driving range hasn’t been mowed recently. Several weeks. Months? The majority of the “range balls” are so old the stripes are gone. That means the remaining rough surfaces hold sand granules that will damage the face of my $400 driver and $800 irons with every ball struck. The range balls have no consistency as to brand. An employee advised the balls used now are pickups lost by golfers, so that no two are alike. A person trying to warmup before play or working on perfecting distance will get variable distances and trajectory heights even with the exact same swing. Some of the balls obviously hadn’t been washed, but most were so worn that washing wouldn’t change their grimy appearance. The putting green remains the smallest in Pensacola with no significant break, although many of the on-course greens have significant break. There is no chipping green, although there is plenty of room for one. On the course things aren’t much better. Numerous “temporary” greens have been in place for months, but the scorecards and distance markers haven’t been changed to advise golfers of the new distances. Several of the bunkers need sand replenishment. On the positive side, the greens installed after hurricane Ivan remain high quality, but the on-course bathrooms may not have been cleaned since Ivan and certainly have not been remodeled since the course opened in the 1950s. The golf cars are clean and the staff attentive, but not well informed. No one knew whether the distance markers related to the middle of the greens or to the front edge. And, I was advised that the purchase of a membership did not permit play on my schedule. The tournament season is coming up and there will be numerous days when the course will be closed to “members”. Marcus Pointe has the best practice green in town, Pensacola CC the best chipping green and Osceola the best fairways. But overall for a serious golfer I would rate Scenic Hills as the worst Pensacola golf course in which to become a member.

Since they rebuilt the clubhouse this place is really nice. All the staff are friendly and the patrons are too. Good food and drinks after a round of golf.
