I read through all of the comments and everything contridicted the next comment. I read that it was all shells. Then I read it was all beautiful sand. I read it was clean. I read it was dirty and full of seaweed. I read it was crowded and the next comment would day it isnt. So let me break down my experience... Sand v. Shells: Simply put... Its both. The sand is literally shells... but there is still sand. Ill be honest... If you are right near the water, you can probably build a sand castle, but dont expect it where youd put a towel. IN the water is different. There is a strip of shells, but keep walking and its nothing but sand. Clean v. Dirty: Again, both... There was NO trash, garbage and recycling receptacles available. I DID see a few beer bottle caps here and there, but not enough for a bad review. There was a little seaweed in the sand... but I didnt experience any in the water. I did find the jaw bone of what I believe to have been a turtle... And I did find a spine picked clean... but again, I had to search for it. Crowded v. Not Crowded: No... It was not crowded at all. There was an area with a lot of people... but they volunteered to group up because there was PLENTY of room to spread out. I think our closest neighbor was about 50 yards away at least. Parking: $5 all day fee where we parked, which is awesome... but the route was confusing. There was a beach right in front of us, but the trails to the beach lead the other way, so we assumed the beach ahead was a private beach. No... It was the same beach. The path just took us in a big circle, which suuuucked. I was dragging a cooler on wheels, but it was a sand path... so I was literally dragging it. There is a parking lot right by the beach, but I assume parking is more expensive. There are bathrooms to change. We didnt have time to search for the showers, so no ideas of those really exist. There are dog parks, but again, no need for those so no idea if those are free/public. As with any beach... DO NOT FEED THE BIRDS... the bastards wont leave you alone if you do. And dont try to out-smart them and walk away from your towel to feed them... theyll follow you back to your spot (I have a 4 year old) who just HAD to feed them... And I tried this "trick" to lead them away. Did not work. Overall... I enjoyed it and if Im ever in the area again... Ill probably go back. I mean... It wasnt crowded at all, and today is Monday, June 5th, 2017. Its summer time. Maybe it gets crowded on the weekends? But the weekdays seem perfect to enjoy some light waves. Oh, I would expect to go surfing here... the waves were pretty gentle. Here are a few photos. The shells are a majority of the "sand". I didnt mind it. And you can see the little bit of the seaweed on the beach. I hope this review helps!

What more not to love park on sand next to sailing center and have the intercoastal plus docks to fish from, deep water under bridge. Across the street Sand Key Park has a dog play area a park the beach, both sides are lovely. Plan on paying to park at Sand Key Park and it is quite a lengthy walk if you want to sit by the water. Dont forget anything in your car and dont forget how much time you have paid to park. Time flys when you are on Florida beaches, if you are not used to the sun, you can ruin your whole vacation from forgetting to re-apply sunscreen, umbrellas may be a pain but if you have children or need shade yourself, they can be a lifesaver (protects from intense sun 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or our ever famous short sun showers, typically they last 30 minutes or just threaten, only to make you and your loved ones pack up go back to the car and then, bam, sun is right back out stronger than before!) If you see lightning strikes take safe cover in your vehicle, the local radio will post if it is hurricane related or worth waiting. I dont suggest swimming alone on any of our beaches nor would I recommend going out deep especially if you cant see through the water and shuffle your feet. Enjoy

While staying in Florida, I prefer this beach to the more popular Clearwater Beach most of the time... especially during typical tourist times of the year. Sand Key is just a few miles farther down the coast and has the same beautiful white sand. Wheras insufficient parking and overcrowded conditions are the norm at Clearwater Beach, Sand Key is much less crowded and weve never had a problem finding a parking spot. Parking is just $5 per vehicle for the whole day! The bath houses are large and clean. There are soda machines and theres usually a food/snack trailer on the premises. You can rent beach chairs, umbrellas and little pop-up cabana thingies and there is a small picnic area to the side of the parking area, with a large shade tree and fabulous views. Since its a park beach, Sand Key closes at dusk. So there arent any sundown activities like Clearwater Beach has. But for simply enjoying sand and sun without the crowds and parking hassle, Sand Key is perfect.

This is my very favorite beach (Sand Key Beach at Sand Key Park) as a local. It offers nice facilities with changing rooms and outdoor showers. There are plenty of shells on shore to comb through. There is plenty of parking and parking is much less expensive than the neighboring Clearwater Beach to its north. Here, parking is one flat fee for the whole day (currently $5 at the time of my review). Best of all, its much less crowded than Clearwater Beach. Some days the water is crystal clear even at waist deep, but that is hit or miss depending on time of year and weather patterns. Still, very beautiful here.

This was a nice little park at the beach. My family and I only visited for the beach and didnt experience the other park offerings. The beach was relatively unoccupied and parking in the parks lot was only $5 all day. There was a "bath house" that offered restrooms and changing space and there were outdoor showers that we were able to use to wash off the sand at the end of our day of hanging at the beach. The mosquitoes were relentless so be prepared and/or bring some waterproof repellent. It was also very windy on the day we went but this likely was just the weather for the day.

Sand key park is nice and well manicured, but expect to pay $5.00 when you park. at first they didnt have the meters, then they put meters in, and now its a minimum of $5.00 to park, no matter how long you are at the beach. This turns me off from it to the degree that I dont want to pay $5.00 just to hang at the beach for a couple of hours. On the flip side of that, Im a local, so I can just go anywhere else of many places I know. If I were a visitor and I wanted a nice relaxing place to lounge on the beach, this would definitely be one of the two places Id go.
