ROBBED BY THE STAFF? VISITORS BEWARE. I do not take the time to write reviews very often. I think back to our experience at the Hotel California in Oct 2013 and I realize I wished someone would have warned me. I maybe could have saved my family and myself 3 months worth of heartbreak and thousands of dollars in losses. Sunday afternoon after a one week stay at the hotel in town for business and pleasure my daughter, my wife and I went to the beach. Upon our return 2 hours later the room was cleaned, the beds were made and the door was locked just like we left it. But one thing was different; WE WERE ROBBED BY THE STAFF OF THE HOTEL! Someone had carefully searched through every little zipper and pouch of our luggage pulling all the most valuable goodies during the 2 hour window that the maids were in our room. We were missing a vintage wedding ring and iPad and many other personal items in the range of $6,000. The Santa Monica Police Department arrived, the forensics unit came and the whole nine yards. The Detective working on the case said he has uncovered many more bad things about this hotel and is pursuing them for crimes. I believe this could be happening all the time. The main reason I write this today is because of the response of Graham Smith and the hotel Management in San Francisco. They had a chance to handle this with respect to us and our experience. They actually made us feel bad and strung us along only to dump us 90 days later. We were told the hotel insurance company would handle it, well guess what? the insurance company denied our claim for no explainable reason. Now the Manager Graham Smith has refused to reimburse us for our loss in any way. It has been a horrible experience for us and the Hotel Management has made it worse. I have reserved my judgment of their actions until now. Now it is time for the public to understand what a bad business this truly is. Please consider this a warning and immediately look for another hotel. We had 4 rooms that weekend with other partner businesses for a trade show and all of them had issues including cleanliness among other things I will not get into in this review. This is about safety and I do not believe you or your belongings are safe at this hotel.

Attention overseas visitors - when thinking about staying in LA then you want to base yourself from Santa Monica. After much searching on the net I found the Hotel California - which turned out to be well worth the net trawling, cause we had the perfect experience. The place was cheaper than most of the hotels in the area - which where a stones throw from the Hotel California... so why bother staying there and pay more for being in the same location ! We got a self contained unit with kitchenette - which really helped us to keep control of our expenditure, as eating out ever night not only becomes a bore - but can burn a hole in your wallet ! We stayed for a week, and it ran out at about $1350 USD - which was pretty reasonable for the area... seeing as its a desirable part of town. Its a 5 min walk to the beach, which you can see from the hotel - and about a 10 min walk to the famous Santa Monica pier - where you can catch a open top tourist bus that will take you all around the spots you want to see in three separate inter connecting bus routes. The bus is a great way to explore the city, and has designated stops that you can hop on and off to explore - with a bus every 30 mins youre never waiting long to get on your way again. We did 3 days of bus trips and saw everything there was to see and did the things that we wanted to ( plan for one major a day ). If youre a tourist and looking for a rustic chic place to stay thats a little different from the Hilton... a place where you can cook your own meal at nights and bring the kids and live in LA like youre in a time share... then the Hotel California is the place for you. One short coming of the place is that there is NO air con in any of the rooms - so if your coming in the summer months then you are most probably going to want to stay some place else if you dont like the heat... cause the rooms will get hot. We stayed in the fall... so it was just right... but on a few hotter days we could see what the others where talking about with complaints about no AC.

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night There she stood in the doorway I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself This could be heaven or this could be Hell Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor I thought I heard them say Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place (such a lovely place) Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year (any time of year) you can find it here Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat Some dance to remember, some dance to forget So I called up the Captain Please bring me my wine He said, "we havent had that spirit here since nineteen sixty-nine And still those voices are calling from far away Wake you up in the middle of the night Just to hear them say" Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place (such a lovely place) Such a lovely face They livin it up at the Hotel California What a nice surprise (what a nice surprise), bring your alibis Mirrors on the ceiling The pink champagne on ice And she said, we are all just prisoners here, of our own device And in the masters chambers They gathered for the feast They stab it with their steely knives But they just cant kill the beast Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back to the place I was before Relax said the night man We are programmed to receive You can check out any time you like But you can never leave!
