I have been remiss for not having posted a review of this wonderful little winery much, much sooner. Montoliva is quite simply my favorite winery. It is not a rose among thorns - we are blessed with many excellent wineries in our area. But Montoliva is a very personal expression of the wine makers art. And Mark Henry is one of those rare individuals who can narrate his passion in a way that allows his listeners to share his joy in the process. Globe trotting friends who have tasted wines all over the world, whom we introduced to Montoliva and Mark, told us that it was the best wine tasting experience they had ever had. They were completely captivated by the notion that the winemaker himself would take the time to sit with them and tell his story and answer every question as if it were the best time hed ever had.

Forget Napas $$ tasting room rat race. Montoliva Vineyard and Winery is a great place to spend an afternoon. Meet the winemaker Mark and listen to his stories about the region and winemaking while you sip his fabulous Italian style wines. Take a walk in the vineyard, pet Cathrine the vineyard cat, and pick some fresh rosemary from Juliannes herb garden. I love the emails with vineyard news and upcoming event information. We are looking forward to another year of food & music events and more summer evening movie nights.

Going wine tasting in Grass Valley? This is the perfect place to start your visit. Hwy 174 is the way the locals go to GV and this is the first winery you will want to stop at. The wine maker, Mark Henry, makes Italian varietals in the Old World style. The tasting room sits just above his vines and offers a relaxed setting to enjoy a bottle (or glass) of his award winning wines. Be sure to ask about the Chicago Park Wine Society. It is a great way to stay involved with the Northern Sierra wine scene.

We live in the Sierra Foothills and are used to great, unknown wines. Montoliva is one of those. Tonight we opened a 2005 Sinestra. What can I say. It was great. A Super Tuscan with a taste of Blueberries and a hint of cocoa in the aftertaste. This small handcrafted winery will soon be much better known. We will miss that but they deserve to be much better known.

By far the best Italian varietals you will experience and the northern Foothills area. Do yourself a favor and come out to The Vineyards and tasting room. It will be an experience you will thoroughly enjoy and tell all your friends about

Marks wines have a unique flair, and the tasting experience comes with plenty of education on winemaking and the original Italian growing regions for the grapes. We recently finished a bottle of Marks Magia - delicious!

We thoroughly enjoyed the wine tasting at Montoliva. Marks wines are big, yet balanced. His knowledge of Italian varietals, wine making, and the history of the local area only add to the atmosphere.

If you like big wines made in the Italian style, Montoliva is the best in Northern California.
