Of course going anywhere that allows you to see real films (documentaries, independent films) and anything other than mainstream numbing blockbusters had to start out with 3 stars. But I was really disappointed at the organization of the place. They could not straighten out the line situation between the line for popcorn, the line to go upstairs and the extra side line for those special folks waiting for the "big movie" of the day. There was too much confusion, only two people working slowly at the concession stand despite the huge line which eventually made quite a few of us unreasonably late for the movie when we got there 20 minutes before it started! It should not take that long to get some popcorn and diet coke. The theater was ok. Seats ok. I would go back only because of the ease of location next to the F train and because of the next door very conveniently located bar. But if I can find something like the AWESOME Sundance Kabuki theater in San Francisco, I would dump this place in a heartbeat.

I am grateful that any movie theatre of this kind still exists in the United States of America. Compared to the 1960s and 1970s there are so few movie theatres left today, especially the kind that show movies about the unexplored dimensions of real life... aka, independent or foreign films. For example, the posters for upcoming attractions at the Blue Ray theatre on 23 and 8th Avenue all depict one of the following, sci fi, animated or crowd pleasing blockbusters with plots that are extremely unbelievable however entertaining they may be. I believe that movie executives just do not trust the public enough to give more exposure to some of the independent or foreign films which play at very limited engagements. I have shown some of these independent and foreign films to my high school class and they were very engaged. Some of the students wondered why these films were not advertised when they were theatrically released.

Sunshine Cinema offers a wonderful cinematic experience for those wanting to catch a limited release film. Snack bar offers a wide selection and items are fairly priced. My advice is to get there early since shows sell out quickly. I also highly recommend the Friday midnight shows which shows a wide assortment of classic/cult films from the late 70s and 80s (e.g. "The Warriors", "Ghostbusters", "Gremlins", etc.). These nights bring you back to a bygone era, before the internet, before cable TV, before people had massive home entertainment systems or video game systems that rivaled the movie theater experience. You can get an enjoyable riff from the audience members. At the end of each movie there is an a applause. I highly recommend the Sunshine Cinema.

I was very taken with this movie house during my recent visit to NYC. Here an usher or should I say customer experience facilitator (I know how CVs can be challenging to spice up) welcomed us with the words: Youre all here to see LIKE SOMEONE IN LOVE, right? She was very kind to invite us back to view the Oscars on the big screen that very evening at no charge. There they gave out goodies for those who correctly guessed the recipients of Best Actor, Actress, Animated Feature, etc. Of course, I did not win the PARANORMAN slippers (much sniffles) but I did enjoy the atmosphere. A bit weird that they showed the trailer for UPSIDE DOWN without sound. Other than that $13 well spent.

Cool theater with a funky decor and great movies. Saw a midnight showing of Evil Dead 2 here. Great price on the tickets. Great selection of food (gourmet ice cream sandwiches? Yes please). All the staff was friendly and great especially for a routine job at a theater. The guy selling tickets was friendly, the concessions girl was helpful and upbeat, and the two guys ripping tickets were awesome with their jokes and patient while I dug in my pockets for the tickets while my hands were full with snacks. Maybe the first great experience I ever had at a theater outside of the actual movie.

I love this cinema, i have been going there for many years, cool in the summer, warm in the winter, but like most movie theaters the food is too expensive, food should not be so expensive @ a movie theater.........after all the establishment does not want you to bring food in the theaters so why does the management not look into serving affordable snacks?people just bring in their own food it defeats the purpose...............i give it 3 stars, when they start bringing in affordable snacks i will give it 5 stars.

One of the few theaters in the city where you can have fun watching Tommy Wisseaus masterpiece "The Room." This place has an excellent selection of independent films to watch as well as the weekly midnight movies. Theve had great films such as Jurassic Park, TMNT (live action), Aliens, Zombi; the list goes on. This theater also has some of the best popcorn Ive ever eaten, and the seasoning bar cant be beat. I say get the large popcorn, pour some apple cinnamon seasoning, and dont share with anyone.

the movie experience was great and the bathrooms were so clean. the cleanest public bathroom ive ever been in and it smelled good. my only 2 problems were the fact that the tickets were so expensive and the food there isnt great. i bought a hotdog there and it tasted awful. come to find out they microwaved the meat instead of actually cooking/grilling it..maybe they were too lazy to actually cook. otherwise i am glad it wasnt too crowded and like i said before the bathroom was very clean..

This is a great theater with art house programming. Many independent and international films debut here so you often have the opportunity to do Q&As with or attend talks by actors, directors and producers. Plus, they do lots of giveaways of various film paraphernalia! They also have a great Sunshine At Midnight series which features older movie selections. The concessions stand offers cool stuff like Divine chocolate bars (many varieties!) and gourmet popcorn.

Sunshine Cinema has to be one of my favorite places to see a movie. There are the standard blockbusters, but there are also funky weekly midnight showings (selections change). I would recommend buying tickets in advance because this theater does sell out. Sunshine Cinema has character, and I am a fan of the dark chocolate ice cream bars at the concession stand. There is also a loyalty program / card available, and you can sign up for cinema newsletter.

My favorite movie theater in NYC. The selection of independent, foreign and arty titles are terrific, as well as their midnight screenings to beloved classics (like The Goonies! Yes, I consider The Goonies a classic). Stadium seating makes for a great viewing experience and the concession stand has great snacks. They also do special events with directors/cast members that are lots of fun. If youre tired of typical Hollywood movies, this is where to go.

Its a nice indie cinema. The building dates back a few hundred years. It was turned into a warehouse storage for a number of years, and then marvelously renovated and turned back into a movie theatre. Inside the theatre itself, there are no frills decor, but the hallways and lobby are nice, as well as the iconic front sign as well. I think it was $13 for an evening movie with a date. I think its a cool spot.

Visited the Sunshine Cinema during a free screening at midnight. The staff is polite and they need a better way control the lines, You really need to arrive early since the theater does sell out. I suggest they get bracelets to determine the people who pop in late and close the line off for the ones who are on line. Otherwise its clean and has a wide selection of noshes and popcorn at the counter.
