Cant recommend outside a spa treatment or culinary class. The Essex as a spa (pool and hot tub included in referenc to spa) and culinary institute are the 2 stars I can give it credit for. Definitely not a resort in execution: poor room maintenance, customer service and disorganized execution. Spa and Culinary Institue were the amenities we were drawn to around the many activities we had set out across our 4 days in Vermont, thankfully otherwise we would have been far more upset with the room and staff. When I initially booked this my wife found references of bad experiences in outdated rooms and called a week ahead to see what they could do or our other option was Stowe Resort, receiving a response that I still have on voicemail that we will receive a room that has received "tlc" from Jennete. Upon arriving, the room we got had an aged carpet with visible spotting at the door and bleach damage heading into the bathroom, the dressers and chairs had visible damage from years of use and it didnt look like any of the pictures online. Day One- When my wife inquired at the front desk, the manager Susanne said thats all she could do as the property has yet to be renovated- weak excuse. This was followed by our order being messed up at the Tavern restaurant on premises with things not ordered and never getting things that were. A business call side stepped that. However the next day the beds were spread sloppily with toys and clothes still in them, breakfast at the tavern had the order messed up for three tables with one lady storming out before her three kids could eat. To top it off the additional towels we asked for my daughter came marked with brown stains. After addressing a Asian lady at the front desk she said she would pass on the message to see what could be done. This brings us to the final interaction at checkout with my wife and Susanne who took off one order of room service dismissively ending a interaction where my wife wanted to express the amount of inconsistency in or standard for execution during our time at Essex. The spa was great, culinary classes are fine and the food tasted well at the on site restaurant when your order is correct. The execution inbetween while staying at this "resort" I couldnt recommend. I would recommend Stowe which we went to for skiing and almost switched too if the distance between going to get our stuff and taking it to Stowe wouldnt have made a worst experience.

We stayed for a "Bone-Appetit" weekend with our dog. The pictures and description in the Yankee magazine sounded like great fun. However, it was not what was advertised. We arrived to find our room door would not work-three trips to the desk to get new keys until finally they called maintenance and they had to repair the lock. The room was clearly worn-furniture faded and really needing a facelift. The bed was sunken in the middle so badly that every time we turned over one of us rolled to the middle. The TV was broken. The advertised room service dinner (voucher comes with your reservation) with your dog pictured in the magazine was not what we received. The photo had meat and steamed vegetables with gravy. We called to inquire about the choices and they had not idea (it was 5 pm) but promised to call back in 10 minutes. When we didnt hear back 30 minutes later we phoned and they said that our phone was broken and it wouldnt receive calls but they had figured out what the dogs choices were for that evening. We ordered our dinner (promised in 15 minutes initially) then 30 minutes when we ordered. It arrived 75 minutes later cold. The dogs meal, instead of meat and vegetables had SALAD! What dog eats SALAD? Finally, we received our bill. Average of $400 a night (not remotely in the category of a hotel priced at this rate) with a $45/night PET fee attached! I stopped at the desk to inquire and they said that there is a pet fee posted on their website which I disputed in regard to the "Bone-Appetit" promo- sort of counterintuitive..... I asked them to check their website, and sure enough, it was "waved" for this package. Then there was a $20 "resort fee" added to the already highly priced room (others were inquiring about it when I was at the desk). That was for your lobby coffee and wi-fi (free in most hotels). VERY expensive coffee, I might add. Just a way to add to the overly priced room fees to begin with. The one good thing was the squash bisque. We had hoped that this would be our "go -to" hotel with our dog for future stays. Nope. Wont be back.

My husband surprised me with a birthday getaway of my choice, I saw the faculties and spa and the fact that it was culinary based I choose here. Unfortunately for me the staff was quite unfriendly. I called the number listed to inquire about a Groupon that I seen and she was short in response informing me that they maxed out on Groupon vouchers already and that was that we got disconnected and she never called back. Trying not to feel disappointed I called again and asked for regular rates she told me that it was $158 a night I really wanted to go and was ready on my way to VT that I decided to still book the room in spite of her negative attitude. We arrived there 2 hours early seeing that we drove from Ri and wasnt sure about the time. We got to the front desk and the they informed us the rooms wont ready. To be honest we were beat but had no expectations of having the room ready.the front desk staff informed us that if we like we cd go to the spa and relax and they will put a rush on the room. Got to the spa and it was informed if was totally booked no cancellations so we just used pool.after the pool we went back to the front desk I politely asked about the rooms and the hostess found it upon herself to scold me informing me in a very harsh tone that just because she said they were going to facilitate us doesnt mean that it was actually going to happen. After this is was highly upset and annoyed and just left the hotel and my husband And I went out to grab lunch. the rooms were ok beds were really great. Only downfall and the major reason for the two stars is the poor customer service. They made me feel like I wasnt wanted in there resort.was only able I stay one night there due to lack of rooms but they gladly moved things around to accommodate another customer in front of me for their 2 night stay. We stayed somewhere for the duration of our stay. The people in VT ARE WONDERFUL JUST NOT AT THIS RESORT SORRY HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED
