This zoo is designed for maximum profit while you are there, its not really designed for the families that come to visit. We couldnt bring ourselves to buy more than just a tiny bit of food because, being the frugal people we are, were not paying $8 for a snack the size of a single serving. But beware if you bring your own food, most seating is off-limits for outside food. Poor quality, overpriced toys and books (not a lot of them either) in the gift shop. We always look forward to buying a quality toy and a book whenever we go to a museum, aquarium, etc...But it was shocking to see such poor quality toys, most places like this have some really special and magical heirloom souvineer toys, but not here. Our World Passport toy is totally broken now and sized incorrectly, the man cant sit in the jeep and the toolbox doesnt fit in the carrying place. The few books they had all had extra stickers on them covering up the suggested price and reintroducing their own highly inflated price. Weve been to the zoo twice and I wasnt impressed--but especially not the second. The first time we had a little baby and we were in extreme heat, so we bought their World Passport brand fan--that didnt last very long--it worked well enough there but was ruined soon afterwards. The zoo was fun enough the first time around because it was novel, but for some reason a lot of the signs only talked about conservation efforts for the animals instead of giving us fun facts to discuss. It looks like that is changing though. So I give it two stars for that. Another concern of mine was there was only one nursing room and that was at the entrance, it would have been nice to have another air conditioned room in a couple more locations as there are bees everywhere in the summer!!! The second time we went with a toddler. The staff wasnt very sociable this year. I got a lot of grunts and shoulder raises and ignores this time around when I tried talking to their employees. Someone threw something dangerous into the (critically endangered) gorilla exhibit; the young employee didnt seem to care. Other than the merry-go-round and the train its a very boring zoo for toddlers. Its all about being herded from one exhibit to the other, with (almost) nothing interactive for toddlers to help them learn. The playground was made for older children and super crowded, it made my toddler nervous. The Savannah exhibit looked very different than the artists rendition and I was disappointed--it didnt look the Savannah and quite broken up with branches and rocks. The conductor sounded scripted, the train went by too fast to enjoy the animals, and people screamed in the tunnel, which was encouraged by the conductor. Adults cant ride with their child on the carousel on most of the animals, even if they pay extra. The line for it is long, and yet the operator let lots of seat go empty (theyre werent broken, it was just being inconsiderate/lazy) . Theres no strollers allowed in the animal building, but theyre not noisy or any messier than shoes. So children ran wild and screamed and tapped on glass on exhibits that said "Shhh--animal needs peace and quiet." Im sure this is way worse than anything a stroller could do, and theyre wheelchairs for some children. I was disturbed by the polar bear, pacing nervously and looking unhealthy. There are enough aquariums and fun exhibits in the state that I dont think my family needs to continue supporting this zoo.

Its not terrible, not great either though. Pricing was pretty decent. Particularly on the day I came because they were giving discounted (read free) admission to people with base access. Even without this though the prices were pretty standard for visiting a private owned zoo. The zoo itself was pretty clean. And not unnaturally crowded. Animal conditions were overall pretty good even for the larger animals. The primate, bear and sea mammal exhibits were particularly well done. The one exception was the "Small animal" building. Here the cages were rather small even for the animals being housed. There were also signs all over the building saying to please keep quiet since the enclosed area acts like an amphitheater. Yet children were literally screaming and running all around the inside the building and none of the staff said a word. My girlfriend and I had to leave because the amount of undisciplined children everywhere was giving us a headache. The "Wildlife Theater" was alright for a free show. However, I could have done without the bad slapstick humor, and random roster running back and forth.Yes they thought it was funny to have livestock running behind the speakers. The owls were probably the coolest animals they had but the large Horned owl only had a single appearance for about 30 seconds. Its also not a large zoo. At only 42 acres its one of the smallest zoos in the country. By comparison the Denver zoo is almost double the size at 80 acres. Both of these are tiny though compared to other major cities zoos such as Los Angeles (133 acres) or the National Zoo (162 acres). As a result though you really wont need more than about half a day to see everything you want. In conclusion its not a bad zoo. I would come to check it out once every other year. Beyond that I cant really see coming back as youll get the same experience with little variety or new things to see.
