This is not a completely private course. My friend and I booked a round here through a golf package, as did the twosome we were paired with. The problem clearly is that Hampton Hall WANTS to be a completely private course and is not particularly friendly nor welcoming to non-member players. Our experience at Hampton Hall was very different from our experience at two other courses we played in the Hilton Head area (Hilton Head National and Old South). When you arrive at Hampton Hall, they tell you nothing about anything -- about where things are or what to expect on the course or what the pace of play is. Suddenly, during our round the ranger appeared and told us gruffly that we were expected to play our round in 4 hours and demanded that we skip a hole. The players behind us played through, leaving nobody behind us. We felt we were playing at a reasonable pace, but we would not have minded a friendly request that we step up our pace. The ranger was not friendly. When we declined to skip a hole, he almost yelled at us that if he had to return, he would require us to skip TWO holes. It was an unpleasant experience. We complained to management when we finished our round and they agreed we had not been treated well and gave us a rain check good for a year. So I do give them credit for that. I liked the course to play on. It was an interesting course. The greens are in excellent condition and are very fast and smooth. There are houses (nice houses) lining the entire course but it still managed to mix in some attractive vegetation and water. The important things to understand if you go to Hampton Hall is 1) you are a second-class citizen, and 2) you will have to play fast, and if you dont, the experience will not be pleasant.

Ive played Hampton Hall several times. Its a great course with beautiful fairways and greens. The greens are tricky where you really have to develop a sensitive touch for the speed - a fun challenge. Practice facilities are top notch, especially the practice sand trap. The setting of the course is beautiful; with beautiful lagoons, forests and home settings. Its a fairly forgiving course, except for the greens. I really like the carts which have filled ice coolers and towels on board. There are two restrooms on the course that have cold water and ice dispensers outside to refill your water cup. A classy place. Ill always visit here on my visits to Bluffton.
