My wife and I were celebrating our fifteenth anniversary with a trip to Hershey, PA. As the weather threatened an evening at the amusement park we decided to dine in at Devon. Now being this is a swanky self proclaimed seafood restaurant the first insult came as we were flatly greeted when we didnt have a reservation and were loosely invited to seat ourselves at the bar. We were assured it was full service, more on that to come. We took our seats and surveyed the menu. I am rather fond of king crab legs and there they were, for $55 for a pound and a half. At this time, I took careful stock, as most serious shellfish lovers do. The golden rule is the farther south and away from the coast the worse the crab or lobster is going to be. What I received went beyond my most pessimistic expectations. In the wrong direction. When the plate arrived they were neatly arranged, but there were no claws or leg tips. Nonetheless the four bulky arms looked to be a promising meal. I picked up the first leg and with the crackers in hand I was ready for the satisfying "SNAP" of a well cooked crab as the shell yields to the force of the tool. What I was greeted with was a soundless smush of overcooked crab. I grabbed it with my hands and promptly bent it in half without breaking. This crab was more fit to be on a car as a tire as to be food served at a proper seafood restaurant. The meat was palatable, not terribly overdone but I was resigned to opening each leg of the crab with the prong of a fork. Safety scissors would have been a more fitting tool than the crab crackers. So there was the second insult, the largest, but not the last. As we sat, and I was silently fuming and parsing out what I was going to say when asked "Is everything OK?" the evening wore on and I was never asked how my meal was. Apparently no one cared. If theres anything worse than overcooked shellfish, its cold overcooked shellfish, so I indignantly tucked in and ate my meal. Insult number three. The last insult was swift in coming as I was served (tossed) the check and my card but no pen. A fitting end to this evening seemingly bent against me. I stood around for a bit hoping to catch the attention of a manager but short of screaming to the top of my lungs and throwing a glass against the wall my disgruntled glare was not going to be met or acknowledged by the staff. To be fair, my side dishes, drinks and my wifes plate were fine. I suppose I should be thankful for that.

After hearing all the rave reviews, I opted to take my wife of 28 years out to Devon last night for our anniversary dinner. I had asked, when making the reservation, for a nice table. Upon arrival, we were seated in the booth directly tangent to the restrooms. Score: 0 points. So, as with many other services, or lack thereof, I encounter in my life, I had to go ask for another table. We were now seated at a 4-top in another room. When my wife sat down, she immediately got up because her seat was wet, as were all the seats. Not damp, mind you, WET. So now we need to call in the troops to dry off our seats. Score: still zero. Took a good while to get a drink after finally settling in. Whilst gazing around, I noticed that the adjacent table, tucked in the corner, had a built in glass cabinet all lit up with wine bottles enclosed. Now there, I thought, would have been an appropriate choice for a "good" table for a special occasion such as ours. The servers were ok. Took two of them a while to figure out who was actually going to serve us. Food was good, but not what I was expecting, especially at $39 for one entrée. My sense was that wealthy Hershey-ites and out of town vacationers are the regulars here, for whom dropping $150 on dinner for two is no big deal. For me, I was looking for something special to impress my wife with. Came up short. Score: 2 stars.

After arriving in Hershey for the first time, we were a little weary about seeing nothing but chain restaurants, grill/bars, and badly reviewed Hershey Hotel restaurant locations often referred to as overpriced. So where does a family of four get a meal that is good and not so greasy? THIS PLACE!! It was definitely nice looking when we went in, but being from the NYC/Northern NJ area, weve seen plenty of nice looking places serve overpriced not so good food. Did I mention it was also my wifes birthday? Which is the ONLY reason I agreed to go to the more pricey place in the neighborhood... and wouldnt you know? It was WORTH it! Really great food!! Even the veggies were done right! And the "crusting" on the seared tuna was a real blackened crust!! If you have ever been to a McCormick and Schmitts, you can consider this as a less expensive, better tasting version! And even though it is pricier then most in Hershey, it really wasnt THAT pricey!! Dinner for 4 with one celebratory choco martini (REALLY GOOD!!!) and add-on grilled shrimp (REALLY REALLY GOOD!!!) plus a desert and the bill portion was a shade over $100. With the kids, we dont drink wine or alcohol so please go elsewhere for that kind of review. Service was great too so I gave a 25% tip. Lets hear it for Devon in Hershey!

The first time I took my wife to Devon Seafood Grill we were floored by the 5 star service and atmosphere, and I assume that you will typically receive the same treatment. However, this evening we attended a musical at the Hershey Theatre and left the show early just because we were excited to stop in at Devon before they closed. We both worked as waitstaff/bartenders throughout our college careers so knowing that showing up at 9:45 when they close at 10 was a party foul, we decided to just sit at the bar and immediately informed the bartender that we just wanted to grab an appetizer and a drink. Apparently this was nothing short of asking for his right kidney, as he made an annoyed face, gave us a menu and told us to "hurry up because the kitchen is closing". Ok thats almost fair, until he asked what we wanted to drink. I asked to look at a drink menu and then came the overdramatic rolling of the eyes. At that point we decided to just leave. I expected more professionalism from a restaurant of this caliber. Never wrote a review in my life but I was steaming the entire drive home and still am. They will no longer be receiving our praises.

My husband and I used to LOVE Devon but it seems, in recent months, that something has changed. We walked out 1 month ago when a rude bartender (not the norm!) refused to honor the web advertised happy hour times. Management contacted us & asked us to return, offering incentive. We decided to try again using our birthday coupons instead (12/7/16). Bar service was half-hearted to start (ended well) when she was talking to another patron but handing me a menu without acknowledging me. It was a lunch menu & we were charged $10 more each than expected because of the mix-up (we did NOT request a reduction in our bill). Dinner was very tasty and prompt but within an hour of departing my husband and I were in separate bathrooms at home getting sick. The only things in common we had to eat were the biscuits and whipped potatoes. He had Blue Point oysters, I had tuna sushi, he had halibut & brussel sprouts, I had seared tuna & green beans. We will not be returning any time soon and do not wish to be contacted or offered incentive to. This is REALLY DISAPPOINTING as Devon has been a place we chose for special occasions and celebrating - no more!
