This place is fantastic and I can thank a recent field trip I took for a science class for cluing me in about it (We were doing a bio-assessment on Balch Creek by collecting macroinvertebrates if you were curious). This creek happens to be a tributary of the Willamette River and was named after Danford Balch, who was the first person legally hanged in the state of Oregon. While wandering around in this park it is hard to believe that you are located just minutes away from Portlands city center. Macleay Park is one of the entrances of Forrest Park. There are a couple fairly easy hikes you can choose to do from this starting location. The longest one is about a five mile round trip haul and heads right up to the Pittock Mansion. I actually wish I had looked at the hiking map posted at the park entrance to learn about this. I believe I turned around to head back right before reaching the mansion. One of the great things about hiking around in this section of forest park is Balch Creek flows right near you. I always find it extra relaxing to hear the sounds of water while hanging out in nature. If you need to get out of the house and be one with nature, but dont want to travel far from home. This is the place to go!

My favorite place to begin a run. There are many trail heads to the Forest Park trail system, but Mcleay Lower is my favorite. Form there you can go on a good run up to the Stone House (an old WPA building that has seen better days). The Audubon Society and Pittock mansion are also a short run away. The main trail is nice during the summer, but I prefer the winter. In the winter the creek that follows the trial is running a faster pace and provides a nice site while walking/running the trail.

Unable to give it more than one star, because after driving over an hour to hike here we found it closed for construction. Then as we searched for another hiking opportunity on our phones we had the privilege of inhaling the marijuana smoke from a group of teens nearby. A disappointing experience to say the least. Would be nice if Google was updated with trail closures. Do your research before heading to this park. Looked like construction may last a while.

My favorite place to hike in Portland(within city limits). The trails are Maintained perfectly by the staff. You can run, walk, take your kids or pets out, or just take a leisurely stroll. There are many cool place to stop including the creepy Witches Castle(more like a house). Regardless, this is a beautiful park with a lot to offer. Having this park so close to the city is amazing. Great place to get a work out in or just hike.

A great staging area for meeting up with friends to go on a hike. It has bathroom facilities, and that said this would be the type of occasion I would be pleased to find there was the alcohol antibacterial hand gel stuff in the bag I packed, even though I am opposed to its use in general.

Though the lower Macleay trail is currently under construction (August, 2017), the upper trails and other nearby trails in Forest Park are a trail runners slice of heaven. If you enjoy rolling hills in a canopy of trees, this is the area for you.

Great park, but way too popular on a sunny weekend day. If youre looking for a good hike, start at the park, but walk up to Holman lane to get to a part of Forest Park with a lot less people.

The park was awesome with tons of hiking and plenty of places for a picnic. The park is huge and connects into Forest Park so if you plan on hiking make sure to consult the maps.

Great trails but it can be quite muddy after some rain. We brought our dogs here and they were covered in mud afterwards.

Came to take a quick walk around the park but the trails go on for quite a ways...there is also a restroom here.

Great hike, currently the old "bathroom" is vandalized with spray paint. Its a shame someone would do that.
