I had time to waste and decided to find a park with things for the kids to do. The park was very nice and had many things for kids to do and lots of shade. I was excited to find it, as it was really nice. Then things started to not make sense. First off, no other kids were here, that was very odd. Then when I laid the blanket down I heard loud profanity from a group of men about 30 yards from me. They kept staring at us. I truly felt scared. This all happened within 5 minutes of being there. We didnt stay any longer, we packed up and then saw the homeless men start fighting and we bolted out of there. So sad, it really is a very nice park. Now, dont think I am a wussy girl, I am a big girl and dont frighten easily. There was just something wrong here.

As part of the official Portland Parks and Rec system, Colonel Summers Park is one of the largest parks located in the inner SE area of Portland. It offers a baseball field, basketball courts, tennis courts and lots of open area. Theres also a community garden onsite. What makes this park special are the unofficial events such as dodgeball and what is locally known as "Monday Funday". Local legend has it, that back when Modest Mouse was a lesser known Portland band, you could hear them practice nearby at the park.

Very large, and the grass seems to be doing well. The playground area was not new, but not unsafe. There were quite a few people around playing basketball and they all seemed friendly. There was a large group of what seemed like homeless people but they were sticking to themselves. I wouldnt allow my kids to play at this park without direct supervision though, so no books for me.

One of the more Portland parks during the summer. Cool kids, weirdos, homeless people, tandem yoga folks, baseball players, frisbee throwers, hula hoopers - you name it. Not the kind of park you bring your family to (although they do have a playground), definitely more of a 20s/early 30s park to hang out with your friends, have a drink/picnic and take in some sun.

Colonel Summers is a quirky park, which some may enjoy more than others. Its fairly small, but has a ball field, tennis & basketball courts. Theres a community garden and a bit of open space. It attracts an interesting & very Portland mix of folks. Only street parking is available and its limited.

Nice park. Some "undesirables" hang out around the covered enclosure. Theres a playground, baseball diamond, tennis courts, lots of grass, community gardens, handball...and local color. Many events there during summer. Great place to people watch and relax.

A great park to hang out and play sports. There is a basketball court, playground with swings, and even a tennis court. The park is almost empty most of the time. There are also bathrooms and even features a community garden for the neighborhood.

The garden was nice to look at, but the covered area near the playground equipment smelled like old pee, and like the other parks we have tried to visit in Portland, there was a good deal of drug use occurring in the park.

Nice park, too bad theres no green grass, only yellow, and homeless population is increasing as i was confronted to fight someone because they wanted "to smoke some smack"

Monday funday is one of the best days of the week at this park. Food Not Bombs will feed you, and they have hundreds of Portlanders enjoying the sunny days every Monday.

Large open area with a ball field, tennis court, basketball court and a little kids play area. No restroom or picnic tables. Nice community garden in one area.

Large sprawling park thats great during the daytime hours. The park has an issue with vagrants, alcohol, and drug dealing. Avoid this park in low light settings.

Theres a beautiful community garden and a farmers market close by. Otherwise, its a lot of grass that gets muddy when it rains. You know, like a park.

When the sun comes out, this is quite the spot. Other than a community garden and tennis courts nothing else stands out, but its still nice.
