It was hard to give a rating for the experience because in my opinion it depends on your age. If youre under the age of 12, you might like it. If youre above the age of 12, theres isnt anything of interest. I hadnt been to the science museum since I was a kid, but Im incredibly fascinated by all things science so on a whim I decided to go have a look. To my complete chagrin, it was more like a daycare center than anything. I searched every floor and couldnt find the first thing I considered interesting or classifiable as "adult" science. I expected elaborate exhibits involving things like lasers, heat, pressure, electricity, and magnetism. Instead, they had things like a table filled with dirt that had water running over it to show how erosion works. They had a container filled with metal particles that you could hold a magnet against to see how magnets attract little metal particles. And, of course, they had some dinosaur skeletons which weve all seen 10,000 times. Im even having trouble remembering the things they had because none of it was in the slightest bit interesting in any way. I do remember they had one of the rooms closed off for a little kids birthday party though. If you have little kids they might find some of it interesting. But if youre over the age of 12 youre going to find it painfully boring and uninteresting. When I was walking into the place I literally had goosebumps I was so excited at the prospects of finding some truly awe-inspiring displays of incredible science. It took about 10 minutes to realize the entire thing was for little kids. I pushed through it all hoping against hope that I was just in the kids section, but I never found anything I considered interesting at all. Painfully disappointing.

Lets just start with the childrens area....I was very disappointed that the exhibitions did not in any way promote active discovery and observation of scientific principles or natural history. Almost all the activities were variations of lectures (albeit via signage) and corresponding worksheets. The water table was more of a water puddle - tiny and ill-equipped, with only a few plastic fish and a magnetic fishing pole. Where were the water wheels and toy vessels and measuring containers? Water tables are perfect opportunities for observing mathematic and scientific principles in action - conservation of volume, measurement, hydraulic properties, etc. The "woodland" area could certainly extend beyond a dimly-lit corner with some animal puppets. How about an ant farm or terrarium for direct observation; perhaps some Young Explorers "field guides" to help identify (real or simulated) animal and plant life; some field vests and backpacks for pretend play; a headlamp and a dark "cave" to crawl through and explore; a rock climbing wall or other active component. Bottom line - not worth going.

True the Buffalo Museum of Science is a throw back to the early era of science museums, but it is still informative and entertaining. We traveled from Erie to see the mechanical dinosaurs. I am a mother of two children (5months -2yrs) and my family really enjoyed the small charming museum (took us about 2 1/2 to 3 hrs. There ARE many hands on exhibits for children, but you have to wait in line for them as they are popular. My husband and I enjoyed the mineral and gem exhibits. It was a fun few hours for us all. I believe the admission a fair price for what you experienced and the gift shop and food was very reasonable in comparison to other museums. I also understand how others who are too consumed by the age of technology could feel poorly about a museum that actually engages you rather than spits out information in a pureed form. I look forward to returning in the future.

The Buffalo Museum of Science, although a small museum, has a wide variety of exhibits, and almost anyone could find something to interest them. The events that cater to children are wonderful--the times I have gone, I saw lots of happy and excited children running about. Because some exhibits are staples, I think adults who have visited the museum as children would definitely feel nostalgic. Buffalo is not a rich city, and this museum could definitely be improved with funding, but I definitely feel as if it is an asset to the city. Special events are probably the best thing to go to if you or your party needs to be actively entertained; otherwise, just strolling around looking at the exhibits can be a day well-spent.

We have been members of the Museum for many years. I still bring my children 9 and 12 a few times a year. The museum is small, older and charming. The staff is trying to do as much as they can with little money. The Egyptian Exhibit, the Dinosaurs and the Space floor always interest my kids. They also try to bring in several traveling exhibits each year. I frequently bring out of town guests to visit it and the response is always positive. The older reviews dont take note of the Connections room which is an interactive area for families. If you are looking for non-stop kid entertainment this may not be the place. But the Buffalo Museum of Science is definitely a place where you can learn about science.

I thought taking the family to a museum would be a fitting way to spend a rainy afternoon. What a disappointment to see so very little space in the museum devoted to exhibits. And even more disappointing to see the poor quality of the current main exhibit on color. One would think having a president that was a former Disney exec, the standards would be higher. It took us less than an hour to see all the museum had to offer and most of what we experienced was not of quality. I would hope, if funding is still coming from the county, that someone from the funding committee makes an impromptu visit and asks for justification on how taxpayer money is being spent.

I was very disappointed with this museum. It is a science museum that seems to target kids and families. However, most items are in a case or behind a rope. There were very few hands on activities for my kids. Certain areas of the museum were also poorly lit and appeared uninviting. My 8 year old son did not even want to walk through those areas because he was scared. We now drive to Rochester, NY for the Strong Museum of play and will not return to the Buffalo Museum of Science.
