You know, I love New Mexico. I lived there for many years. I love the atmosphere the lifestyle and the food. I love Old Mesilla and Las Cruces, always have. It would seem from appearances that the Double Eagle is the embodiment of all those attributes. I had been there years ago and it was excellent food and service. I went to the Thanksgiving day buffet this year (2009) thinking this would be an acceptable substitute for not cooking this year. I was sadly mistaken. To start we were seated at what seemed to be the "kids table" in the corner of a dining room with opulent decor and dining tables, not sure why but we were relegated to a folding table covered with a table cloth that was 3 times too big for it which made sitting at and getting out of almost impossible. My family members and I tucked the edges under to avoid an accident. Our server approached the table and asked " waddaya want ta drink" we gave our drink order and she left without saying a word. No instruction or direction to the buffet. When she came back we asked what we were supposed to do and she said "well go get a plate... then fill it up!" Soooo... we did..... upon entering the room where the food was there were no plates immediately available there were a lot of tables with different kinds of food on them but No Plates! I passed the cheese and fruit table , the breakfast items table (which I didnt understand at a thanksgiving buffet at 1 pm), the salad table and the side dish table, got all the way to the back of the room and voila! there was a table with plates on it! Yay! Okay, plate in hand I maneuver my way back to the fruit and cheese table and discover that all the cheeses are dried out and discolored from being out for what appeared to be too long, ditto for the fruit. Okay, I can forego the fruit and cheese after all that is not really what I came here for, moving on to the salad table. there was caesar salad, not exactly thanksgivingy but okay Ill try some, wow really soggy and wilty and extremely oily croutons, were completely soaked and spongie, okay mixed greens salad.....wheres the dressing?... maybe here ? nope, maybe over here? nope, mixed green salad with no dressing Yum! okay moving along.. main event the table with roast beef turkey and ham. turkey?... pretty good, not dry. Next, dressing and gravy well the dressing is almost indescribable ...I am not sure how you achieve dressing that is totally soaked in grease and be dry at the same time but they did it, which maybe I could have gotten around but it had a weird flavor of some sort in it like curry or tumeric or something like that. Not that I dont like those flavors just not in my dressing. mashed potatoes were dry, stiff and brown?????. In the midst of us trying to find something edible on this buffet and trying to salvage our holiday meal some roving mexican troubadours came to our table and asked if we would like to hear a song, how nice, we thought and said why yes of course we would love to hear a song! "That will be 10$" Oh, no thank you we said, and after that promptly asked for our ticket. Now i dont know what has happened to this fine old restaurant, wether it has changed owners or they are trying to save money b/c of the economy but all in all this was a really disappointing experience and totally not worth the money we spent or the drive there. We will not be back!

A really poor service experience with only good food for high dollar prices. My wife made reservations for New Years Eve at the Double Eagle. We had a similar seating experience to Dzeklina. When we arrived the restaurant wasnt very busy, but our table wasnt ready so we waited a short time. We began our meal with the stuffed mushrooms which were good but slightly cold and followed with the garden salad. For our entree we ordered the special, prime rib which included champagne. The food was good but that was all not any better. Now on to the poor service... The waiter never allowed my wife to finish her order before he switched to taking my order. No bread was brought before or with the meal, though there were butter knives and bread plates on the table. The waiter never returned to our table after dumping the meals off, but rather (without breaking stride) passed by our table asking if I would like another glass of wine...again not asking my wife if she would. No au jus or horseradish was brought with our prime rib. I ordered a baked potato with my meal and an additional chile relleno on the side...but no potato was on my plate. The vegetable medley was very small and sad. No champagne was brought with our meal. Near the end of the meal we flagged down a hostess asking for another glass of wine and she said she would get our server. Once he arrived my wife ordered a glass of wine and I ordered a martini. We also complained about the lack of bread and Champaign and poor service to our waiter. Later when he brought our drinks my martini was brought in 2 dainty martini glasses...he apologized saying they were out of clean martini glasses. He said he would speak to the manager and see if he couldnt comp our desert. He returned offering a creme brule if we would like....but never offered us a desert menu. We said no thank you to the creme brule and he said they would comp our last round of drinks as he said he couldnt deduct the price of the champaign from our New Years Eve Meal as it was all combined. When I received our bill, only my martini had been compd. So....mushrooms, 2 house salads, 2 prime rib plates (that included champaign that wasnt delivered with the meal or deducted from the price), 3 wines and the worst service imaginable at supposedly a gourmet restaurant came to $147. After complaining to the manager he kept saying "what can I do to make this right?" I wasnt going to ask for a free meal, but wanted to see what he would offer. He never offered anything but a free round of drinks if we returned...oh but we had to look him up, hoping he would be there, and remember us to get that deal.

I am so OVER the Double Eagle and Peppers. It is a real shame because they have alot of potential with the elegant ambiance and the food and wine are good. However, repeatedly, we keep going back for special occasions only to be reminded how poorly they treat their clientele. Most recently we took my new in laws and my children for Christmas Eve dinner, the first fine dining experience for my children and a very special first Christmas celebration for us as a family - My in laws had been to Double eagle on a previous trip out and were horrified at the service then but kept hope that perhaps it was a fluke. We waited for 45 minutes for our table that we were told was still being used only to eventually be seated in the Peppers portion of the restaurant near the fountain on garishly painted tables with the brick flooring crumbling underneath our chairs, causing unbalanced seating and inability to scoot into the table. It was loud and not what we had reserved. We were appalled as we were planning on fine dining and the ambiance of the double eagle. The hostess was extremely rude and argumentative and informed us that all the restaurant was double eagle for the evening. I believe this type of management of clientele is deceptive and disrespectful and unprofessional. I should have been informed of such when I made my reservations 2 weeks prior. Had I known I would not have made reservations. And there was no walking out without a penalty as they require your credit card for the reservation... ! In addition, the more elegant dining area had 2-3 tables that were not being used and the dining area in the far back was set but NO ONE was seated there. The management had chosen to seat people arriving for fine dining in the louder much more informal cafe-style Peppers patio and yet charge double eagle prices. I was horribly disappointed - in the argumentative nature of the hostess and in the decision of the management to treat their clientele so deceptively. My family and I will not be returning. Meson de Mesilla serves some nice meals in a quieter setting as does the Sunset Grill. Most surprising has been the meals we have eaten at the Paisano Restaurant. I would much rather support the growth of those businesses that appreciate their clientele. (the back room was never seated with customers between 7-10)
