No stars at all would be better. This place is terrible. I booked through Reserve America. They show a map with a green camping area - to me, that meant grass. Ive never been there before, so how would I know. There are also no accurate descriptions about the sites available. When we pulled in, it looked nice - grassy areas where people were set up and a nice man greeting us at the gate. He had someone escort us to our parking spot for the evening. Yes, it was a parking spot next to an old building. No picnic table, and for obvious reasons no fire ring. My family of 4 was traveling in a VW camper, so we depend on being able to unload some things from the van and then we go explore. First, there was no room to unload anything as we were in a parking spot. Second, its a public parking lot, I didnt feel secure leaving anything behind. My wife went to the bath house and said it was disgusting at best. Wed been traveling for 9 days in the van at this point, so weve seen our share of campgrounds on this trip. Im sure if it werent a parking lot, had clean bathrooms and was less of a tailgating experience, itd be a nice place. Unless you are self contained and dont have anything to put outside, dont bother. Needless to say we didnt stay the night and opted for a hotel instead.

this is a salem town operated park, they are in the process of upgrading in some areas and hopefully that will make things better....it is an interesting site, remnants of an old fort complete with moats and an old seaplanes hanger that would make a great something if it were/is savable.....beach is rocky but nice and there are some days when the park is invaded by kids during the summer, so park is ok.....camping is unique, many sites are in the parking lot, some are in a barren field that is apparently boat storage in the winter, there is a mens room and a ladies room in the central part of the park, mens room had sink, urinal and two toilets and two small showers (or at least no dry area), some of the camping sites are really on a slope and most seem to be away from parking so you will get to lug everything to your site....showers did have lots of hot water, and there were absolutely no bugs!!!!!! the maps or their web site are out of date so it is hard to tell what you are getting....it is apparently the closest camp site to boston and is in salem which is a very interesting city and you can snag a trolley ride to get a tour, you can also walk to the willows area which is pretty interesting itself!

We stopped here on our way from Philadelphia to Acadia National Park and wow what a treat! The campground is located on an old coast guard island and there is a large abandoned sea plan hanger in the middle of the campground which makes it a little eerie but cool non the less. What I did not expect was the beautiful views and all of the awesome little beaches and rocks to climb and trails to follow. It was truly a unique place but one of the neatest that I have been too and I would have loved to stay longer but we plan on going back again sometime for a long weekend! Short less than 10 minute drive into downtown Salem. Friendly staff. Clean facilities. 5 & 6 year old sons had a blast and could have easily spent a few more days exploring the area. Really unique campground but definitely worth checking out!

We wanted a base camp for Boston, Salem, and Cape Ann. This camp is just about perfect for its proximity, and we were very surprised and pleased with the location. We chose the parking lot because we wanted to be near the water and enjoy the great views of Salem Harbor. So many boats in the bay, peaceful, and tranquil, we loved it here! We stayed for a total of 6 pleasant days. The staff were very helpful in meeting our needs, both in the park and helping with travel plans and directions for our daily treks into the cities. This is now one of our favorites in 12 months on the road, and we intend to come back next year. We would highly recommend Winter Island Park to anyone with similar needs for a base camp, and who enjoy water and boats. Gordon & Susie, full timers from Washington State.

Just got back from spending 3 nights at Winter Island Park. We had a wonderful time tent camping there! Beautiful park, friendly staff, clean bathrooms and showers. Make sure to book early to get a good site. I recommend calling and speaking with some one about which sites are best if interested in tent camping. The beach is lovely! Very close to down town Salem, Peabody, Danvers. There is a trolley you can take in to town. Lots to do in the area. FYI, this is not a traditional campground, it is a public park. Not all of the campsites are surrounded by trees, so not all of the tent sites are private. However, it is very safe there, no body will bother your belongings while youre out touring. Check out Salem Willows Park while youre there. Totally worth it!

This is a terrible RV camp. Half of sites are just the edge of a paved parking lot; No Trees, No Privacy, No space, sites are tiny and many are up against a run down building. Also there is no dumping station so you are sent out of the camp to a locked private sewerage area that was hit or miss if someone would answer the phone to open the place up. Maybe the tent sites are better but other than a handful of sites on Safari field the RV camping isnt very good. Check out Satellite / Google Maps 3D view of the place before you book and hope you can get a space in the Safari field.

If you are seeking a place that is close to Boston and minutes away from the commuter rail into the city, then this is 5 stars. However, if you are seeking a memorable camping experience then this is one star. There are electric and water hookups, but beyond that it is a large dusty parking lot where the spaces are marked by chock lines in the dirt. The bathroom was clean but sorely in need of maintenance. Fire pits are not provided because campfires on the ground are not permitted. Based upon your intentions this could be one star or five stars, therefore I gave it a three star rating.

Do not camp (tent) here, unless you really need a spot for one night. 1) There are those nasty raccoons that come to your tent in the middle of the night, even if you have stored food in your car. 2) Most sites do not offer privacy, are located by the access road to the marina. For some reason, the local tour bus will pass many times on that road during the day, you being scrutinized by the bus passengers. 3) Curfew is not enforced, so if you are stuck with noisy and retarded neighbors, dont expect to sleep very well. Only sleep here for really last resort.

My rating of 5 stars applies to only 2 tent sites: 26 & 27. They overlook the harbor and have a bit of privacy. The other tent sites have no privacy and/or are a hike to the bathrooms. The RV sites are, as described in other reviews, essentially a parking lot. If you can overlook that, the campground as a whole is incredibly scenic, is convenient to Salem as well as Boston (in season, a ferry runs from downtown Salem to the park), and is a find.
