Just returned from a golf trip there this past weekend. We played a scramble format Keep in mind this is a state funded facility. Here are the Cons of the place (in my opinion): The fairway bunkers were is dismal shape, basically unplayable. The greens had been punched and sanded and were not a good putting surface at all. A Bridge was out An elevator was broken A stair leading from an outside porch was broken Just appeared a little run-down Here are the Pros of the place (in my opinion): The course is a really good layout. Reasonably priced Decent practice areas Fast Carts, with Ice Chests Fairways were nice Greenside bunkers were nice but not raked The Golf pro did call about 2 days before our trip (consisting of about 35 men) to inform us of the fact that the greens were being punched and sanded. We thought that was a classy, honest move. The beer was ICE COLD Very good staff and friendly people. Food was great. The restaurant actually was packed on Friday and Saturday Evening. The service for food and drinks were TOP NOTCH! Great attentive young staff, with “Yes Sir” and “Thank You”. For that alone, I would play there again.

First time out on this course after finding it in a Google search for golf along I-20. At first I was concerned it wouldnt be worth the extra miles off my route. I am so glad I made the trip. Everything in the clubhouse was superb from the pro to the cost of a couple of beers. This course will test all parts of your game, but confidence in your tee shot is paramount. I had the place pretty much to myself on a hot Friday afternoon so I took the time to drive up to the point where the tee shot wasnt blind to get some idea of alignment. That was key to a good round. Interesting routing and fair greens were also a big part of my positive experience. Par 3s require accuracy w a long iron if you play one of the back tees. Yes, the fairway bunkers need work, but that should only dissuade you from coming if you are the most precious of golfers. Go play this course!!! Its worth the trip.

Black Bear Golf Club is a "hidden gem" worth visiting for any golfer who happens to be in the area near Poverty Point. For some it will be the reason to plan a trip to the area. Black Bear offers a terrific, undulating layout thats a combination of links- and parkland-style courses set against a bayou backdrop. Yes there are Black Bears that make the occasional appearance. They wont likely present a safety concern for those who use common sense (no feeding or petting--they arent pets). The staff has every reason to feel pride in what they have developed and maintained to high standards.

We stayed at a bed and breakfast in the area, and the owners recommended this place. I had the chicken and it was very delicious, and the asparagus was cooked perfectly. My wife had the steak salad which I finished for her and it was amazing as well. The service was fantastic and the manager came to our table to see how everything was. We had a great evening, and it is also very kid friendly, and they have a kids menu as well. Our kids had the steak cubes and sweet potato fries. Both were delicious!

really nice course and great staff. its very well maintained and even tho its pretty far out of Monroe its worth the drive. play it in July and August and it plays very dry and fast, any other time it plays much softer.

Great layout. Twilight rate is great price for a good course. Mostly large fairways but still challenging if a fairway is missed. Overall an 8 out of 10.
