The good: excellent acoustics and productions. Ive sat up close on the main floor as well as sitting in the cheap seats all the way up in the upper balcony, and you can hear everything crystal clear. The bad: the seats are uncomfortable, and the sight lines arent great on the main floor the closer you get to the stage. The ugly: bathrooms are kind of gross. Overall: Chicago is lucky to have a world class opera house and production company, so Im willing to put up with some of the facilitys deficiencies. And while main floor seats can be pricey, if you sign up for emails from Lyric, they offer all sorts of last minute deals, and like I said, you can get tickets for under $50 to sit in the upper balcony and it still sounds great up there.

This is late post. My visit was in March . When we asked employees questions about the opera house and the show they seemed very annoyed. We are sorry that it was our first time. The opera which was romeo and Juliette was quite lovely. It was an older crowd which must frequent because there was alot of sleeping and snoring going on. The seats are small and uncomfortable. Security kicked us out immediately after the show into the cold to wait for our cars for valet. Many of us waited in the cold chicago weather for our cars. For all the money we spent I thought we would be treated better. Yes there is better ways to get tickets for this place or any show in chicago. I suggest Goldstar. Beware the employees here are moody and not helpful.

There is something incomparably old-school about patronizing an opera house that continues to thrive. From whichever way you view this building, inside or outside, its impossible to avoid being awed by this magnificent example of the 1920s art deco which makes Chicago such a convincing Gotham. I am not an expert in architecture or interior design, but even if I were, my expert words would not be able to capture the charm of this structure. Your only option is to see it for yourself. Please note this review is for the Civic Opera House itself, not the Lyric Opera or any other group that performs inside. I dont even like opera performances, but that cant take away from the outstanding nature of this building.

Beautiful. I had the opportunity to attend a ballet here. From the moment you walk in it changes your mood. Its classic. Beautiful. Seeing something with history and culture is a nice change nowadays. Spending time supporting the arts is important. And once you hear the music, the voice, the dance you will feel something beautiful inside. Take some time to take in some culture. You wont be sorry

Such a beautiful building with amazing acoustics. Even the view from the upper balcony is stunning. If you ever have an opportunity to come here I highly recommend it. They also put the translations above the stage on a small projector screen thats out of the way yet noticeable.

Overall nice place. Was suprisingly underwhelmed with the decor in the theater. It seemed to lack the intricate little details that other theaters seem to have. The ceiling was pretty much just solid gold colored.

I really enjoyed coming here about a year ago I seem the smashing pumpkins and it was a beautiful show. The set up and seats were nice for the acoustic set they did as well. I would without a doubt come back.

My husbands firm got tickets to here to attend an opera. We all had such a lovely time and it was different for me as I have never been to an opera . The building itself was beautiful as well. I loved it !

It is okay because I went there to see if anyone knows about Maria Tallchief (because she choreographed there) but no one knew, also you are not aloud to take pictures inside of the beautiful building.

Great sound, beautiful space. But a little too big for a "musical" (which is hosted here occasionally). Bathroom / food lines are a little too long during the intermission.

Outside this building is somewhat ho him, but the interior is outstanding. Very ornate and beautifully crafted. Weve seen a few shows here and its an enjoyable experience.
