We moved to our house on 801 Clifton Road (the white house with the S on the chimney in 1958 I think. Next door lived my first girlfriend Rhea. I was 5-9 she was 3-4 years older, red hair and freckles. The Thompsons lived on the other side, up the street the Witherspoons and down by Lullwater Creek my best friend Joe Hedigio. We were members of Druid Hills where I learned to swim & play golf. I learned to ride my bike between my house & ArLynn Worth School where I went from 1st to 5th grade. I had to walk home the day the principal, Miss Bagwell came in and told us, "They killed the President, everybody go home." "The Russians may invade". Glad I missed that. Fernbake Forest was my personal back yard. There were no fences, Joe & I had it to ourselves. I knew where every snake and turtle lived and what time of day youd find them sunning on which rocks. Fernbank was also the local public elementary school but none of those kids ever hung out in "The Woods". Joe & I would follow Lullwater up to where there was a convent and the try to irritate the Nuns until they broke their vows of silence. We succeeded more than once. Im glad it has been preserved but it kinda saddens me that there are no longer 5-10 year olds riding their bikes all around that neighborhood and playing in "The Woods". I often wonder how my life would be different had we not moved away from that neighborhood - it had everything a kid could want. We moved up next to the Chattahoochee. That was a great place to grow up too. We had horses and my dog & I would walk down by the river very day after school. Those woods are now preserved by The National Parks & Recreation gestapo. No kids playing there now either. I think it sad how you dont see kids "ruling" neighborhoods from their bikes like you used to. But I had fun!

We have visited several times with City pass tickets and loved it. This time was different. The playground attendant was super rude to several of my kids needlessly. It was supposed to be a highlight of the visit and turned out to put a damper on the rest of the day. Not sure if well ever return if this is the kind of "service" we can expect from what is supposed to be a kid friendly attraction.

The forest and museum are connected. You cant do one without the other. Its so cool that everything is advertised separately, but for a family of 6 would be almost $100. Maybe I didnt research well enough, but should be clearer.

I went with a school group of first year olds and everyone that worked there was kind and helpful. We transitioned from one area to another smoothly! Great place to visit.

Beautiful forest. Theyve recently cleared a large number of invasive plants from the forest. Great place to teach your kids about different plants and enjoy nature.

Beautiful forest located right in the middle of Atlanta. If you love nature, this is definitely a place to visit.
