Long story short, their exhibits are great, their animal caretakers and knowledgeable, but the FONZ gift shop customer service needs some serious work. They certainly ruined my day - over a $2 map. While my family and I were visiting the National Zoo, my shoe started falling apart after about an hour into our visit. The sole was coming off in a bad way. We had started at the Kids Farm so I ended up limping to the smaller gift shop asking for flip-flops. They told us the main shop would have some, but when I asked to glance at a map so I could decide whether I could limp there before my shoe fell apart entirely, I was told Id have to purchase it or go find a sign. We decided to return to our car, realized it would have been too far and went home. Now I am seriously debating whether we will return at all.

Horrible experience! The worst zoo I ever even to. I understand it is a non-profit zoo but the zoo was horrible. No animals seen in the first 5 cages. The landscape was overgrown and was keep uptight. The zoo was also under construction but it seems like the zoo was just just there just because. Other than that, for a national zoo to be in the DC area, and for it to have an appearance like that was unacceptable.

I love the national zoo its a very good place to enjoy yourself and learn lots of interesting things about animals.You cant beat free admission and when you become a fonz member aka friends of the national zoo you help with conservation efforts.By the way gifts and food that you purchase at the zoo also donate to conservation.

Not a public transportation friendly place. Walking up steep hill from Metro and there is only one pedestrian entrance and exit. After a long day, we were too exhausted to walk back!! The animals are in good condition and there are plenty of great gift shop. Bring your car and go early for parking spot.

The Dolci Gelati gelato there is the best thing at the zoo. It is the perfect thing to eat while going for a stroll through the zoo.

The place beautiful but miss many of animal and services. In fact, we have not seen a lot of animals, only the elephant was there

Go to your local zoo, because I garuntee this ones not better, went recently, small not many exhibts, most are closed

The DC Zoo is beautiful and fun! The staff and volunteers are knowledgeable and helpful.
