I dont know who wrote the other "5 star" reviews but this place was awful. My buddies and I had just got done climbing over Mosquito Pass and were very hungry. I mean starving hungry. So we decided to stop off in Leadville for food before heading home. After walking up the only street in town we reluctantly decided on the Golden Burro. The interior looked like it hadnt been altered in over 4 decades, the beer selection was lacking and the menu items did not look appetizing. After perusing the menu we decided we were going to try to enjoy a beer and a snack and head to another town for our dinner. We ended up ordering the chili cheese fries and a salad. The cheese on the fries was not melted at all, the chili only faintly resembled any kind of chili I had ever seen and the fries tasted as if they had been in the freezer since the Kennedy administration and brought to us partially microwaved. My friend reported the same with the salad tasting of freezer burn. By the end of our snack we had eaten only about half of the fries (due to the fact we hadnt eaten since 9am and it was now 5pm) and my friend ate about half of the salad. We basically ended up paying $10 a person for a soft drink and two bottled beers. Im giving this place 1 star because I thought the golden donkey sign was cool. I would have rather eaten a energy bar than wasted my time and money on this place. Do yourself a favor and go a few towns over and try someplace else.

Let me start off by saying that from the time we sat down to the time we left all we had from the wait staff was a bad attitude and almost annoyed that we were there. Not to mention the numerous signs up about children eating in the restaurant. If you want to bring your children the sign in the front and on the menus state if your child runs around they will not be served food. Also had a sign up about what kinda shoes you can wear into the restaurant. They also had a sign up in the bathroom stating how you should be patient for their plumbing, and you dont need to use a whole roll of toilet paper. As far as the food, it was good, but not for the way you are treated. The waitress did not want bother with us, and since we had more then 6 people we had to give her a 20% tip, which she didnt deserve. The service is slow, and if you want a refill on a drink, FORGET IT! You may as well go next door and get a bottle coke. When we tried to pay it took another 20 minutes, apparently they do not want to take your money. The Hotel next door as better food and better service, Oh and they like kids, so the next time youre in Leadville dont eat here, eat there.

After reading some of the other reviews for the Golden Burro, it didnt sound like it would be a very pleasurable dining experience. Im wondering if this is because the other reviewers had inflated expectations, and the G.B. failed to meet their exacting standards in eateries. Or were their experiences as truly as wretched as they claim? Who knows? I thought all the signs and rules (no bike cleats, no noisy kids, etc.) was a tad excessive, but charming and funny in a way (since there was so many), and I loved how the G.B. has totally embraced the history of their establishment and the history of Leadville - right down to the menus, which are full of interesting tidbits of historical info. Quinceys $8 filet minion special was hearty and delicious, and High Mountain Pizza is also quite good - although lacking in proper wait staff, especially if youre sitting outside on a nice day. But if youre looking for greasy spoon/mom-and-pop old fashioned diner atmosphere and aint too picky about it, Golden Burro isnt bad at all and I would definitely go back.

We didnt like something we were served and mentioned it when asked by the waitress. The manager came to our table already visibly angry (before we said anything). We told him what we didnt like and he blew up. His reaction was completely over the top. We took our kids and left. His name was Dave and he is not a stable person. The rest of the food was acceptable but not great and usually managers welcome feedback when the food is less than your expectations but not this guy. So if youre disappointed - keep it to yourself! The decor was bad, the waitress was nice - feel sorry for her though, working for that guy.

Food was good, but, the service was painfully slow and unfriendly. They go out of their way to tell you that the service is slow with a sign at every table stating this fact. There are also an insane number rules which patrons must obey posted all over the restaurant, including, no bicycle shoes allowed (which are basically just sneakers). Why the hell do they not allow bicycle shoes??? Seriously, unless you have to, dont stay in Leadville if you enjoy a decent dining experience. Pizza Hut and Subway are the best restaurants in town.

Lets be honest there is no good resturant in Leadville but this one is by far the worst in service. Our waitress made no eye contact, she took 15 or more mins to get to our table, she was b!%@& out the cooks and the restaurant could here, place seems grimy, food is barley edible, and went we paid I mentioned this to the cashier. I told her it was the worse service Ive ever had and im a waitress as well and was disgusted. She shruged it off took a few dollars off and apparently this happens a lot. Save your money this place is terrible.

For all of you leadville trail 100 runners and traveling guests: The management at this facility does not support the race. In fact they wish it would, "go away." Although I can see how a small town restaurant would like its small town service, I dont understand how they do not support what will bring them so much revenue through its travelers. Manager seemed completely unstable. Maybe if the runners and guests of the race this year do not patronize this facility, then perhaps they will have a change of heart.

There was a wait , but that wasnt the thing I bothered me about our experience. I saw a sign that said the locals voted this restaurant #1 for like 5years running or something like that. Anyway the food wasnt bad ,but the service was. My family and I wanted at least a half hour or more and on top of the my food was cold and I saw several locals seated after us being served food. Maybe just bad timing , but wont be going back. My family also got diarrhea about an hour later.

I see a lot of bad reviews, I hope the staff attitude problems have been rectified. The fact is I do believe because of its location the Golden Burrito get a lot of people with higher than usual expectations. I do believe in the day we were there they seemed to be short staffed, and hectic. Our meal was good fair, a bit pricey, but kind of expected for a tourist place. There are other places in the region, wed go back if in Leadville at lunch or breakfast.
