Closed for the season. DANKE.

Whoa! One of Colorados most famous 14ers (14,000 foot mountain)! The views up at this mountain are breathtakingly magestic! Theres little wonder why the natives called this area a "gem in the mountains". This mount is a sight to behold regardless of the mode of your preferred transportation up the mountain! All the sights up are magical. We drove up the mountain to Echo Lake to start our hike. On the way up we saw every kind of hiker, road hikers, bicyclists, motor bikers, joggers, you name it... They were here. Mt Evans attracts all kinds of adventurers to its beautiful sights! Highly recommend this hike. It has a very challenging climb just as well. This hike was the toughest of hikes Ive ever embarked on! We took the hike from Echo Lake to the first Chicago lake. It proved to be the beginning of a gruesome day of a climbing treck that left me sore from my calves, thighs, hamstrings, glutes, traps & shoulders!! The thin air up there is the biggest challenge to deal with (if your not from around these parts). Every ten foot incline is a kick to a chest. On the contrary, on your way back down your descend... as you climb down into thicker atmosphere, your energy starts to come back as long as your on a descend. We started the hike at midday and made it back out under a full moon. As painful as it was... It was equally as much fun! Distance: About 8-12 miles RT. Elevation Gain: Trail gains 200 feet, then drops 400 feet, then gains 1,400 feet to the upper lake Trailhead: at Echo Lake campground

This is one of my favorite places to go in Colorado. When out of town guests visits (and the weather is right) I refer them or bring them on up this road in search of the great Mountain Goat (which are non native and were actually introduced by the state of Colorados Division of Wildlife). My Mom has yet to recover from her trip up 2 summers back as she doesnt do so well with heights/narrow roads. You can purchase a day pass or a special parks pass which allows you access to other great parks such as Rocky Mountain National Park (this is the one I went for). You could also hike or bike up but I have yet to experience the urge. On the trip when I purchased the parks pass at the station/visitor center off of the highway the weather actually wasnt so great (viability was about 10-15 feet until you reached the summit) so the folks at the gate let us through without even seeing the pass (this made me a bit sad but I know the money goes to help the state parks and Id be sure to get use out of it anyhow). Since moving here I dont tend to notice much with altitude changes but I can remember becoming a bit tired when I was a sea level liver. I did make sure my guest had been loading up on water since arriving to Colorado and I packed lots of tasty treats. I think the biggest notes here are to of course bring some warm clothes (just in case, mountain weather can change so fast), have a couple hours set aside (so you can take your time and not be in a rush, the traffic can be hectic), as well as some provisions.

we had a great experience. We arrive for sunrise and got to see the Denver Metro from the distance. We also climbed the very short summit climb so that we could say we have "summited a 14er." after sunrise goats and sheep were very easy to locate and view at the summit. The white goats were literally at the summit, even walking across the parking lots. At this time of year there are baby goats, and we probably saw about 30 total. There were also three or four bighorn sheep in the area. Recommendations: 1. make sure you bring optics, like binoculars if you want to get a good closer view of animals. They are absolutely necessary, in that we were quite close to the animals we were viewing. But it is always good practice, and a number of the valleys on the way up can have elk herds which will be a few hundred yards away. 2. If you are doing photography, make sure you bring your zoom lens. Seeing wildlife is not a long shot, and you will get opportunities to get good shots most days if you bring the right equipment. 3. If you drive up to the summit for the sunrise, make sure you bring very warm clothes. The morning we were up there it was not only 42° but it was also very windy – somewhere around 40 mile an hour winds. Make sure youre ready for that. Other than that, watch out for the many cyclists, make sure you drink water input on plenty of sunscreen and have a great day.

My friend and I are from OK and we were in Denver for a couple of days for a conference. When we had a little free time, we chose to go to Mt. Evans but with no preparation at all. The drive on the way to the summit was just amazing and a bit scary at times, and it also reminded me of the roads back in my country Nepal, located in the middle of the himalayas. So we get to the top never realizing that it was going to be super cold. the temp was 32 degrees F, but the wind chill was about 0. We almost froze our butts off when got out of car, but it was worth it. we got to the very top and the view was just drop dead gorgeous. Would definitely go back again but will be a little prepared next time!

The views are worth the white knuckle drive. Take a jacket and wear shoes that are good for hiking and/or walking on uneven ground. It can be rather cold at the top. The path up can be tricky to walk if you wear the wrong type of shoe. Most importantly, pace yourself. We are from sea level and the altitude was tough on me. I was ready to get in the car and drive back to lower land after only going about 15 feet. I had to sit down and close my eyes and do some deep breathing. We saw 2 people that were hurt in falls. Take your time and watch your footing but, do go and enjoy the wonderful view.

One of the most beautiful drives Ive been on. NOT for people with vertigo! The vistas at the top are breathtaking (and so is the altitude!). On our last trip to Co., I passed up a day in the Rocky Mountain National Park to come here for a second day. I wasnt prepared the first day as we drove up just on a suggestion from someone in town. Bring your camera gear and warm clothes. Great spot for photographers to catch wildlife and incredible landscapes. The only downside is the driver CAN NOT take his eyes off the road to enjoy the view. There is a lack of pull offs on your drive up.
