The Mare Island Preserve is a great spot to learn about early history of Mare Island. There is a visitor center with very friendly people. The historic cemetery tour is a must see. The cemented road trail that goes to the top where the ghost ship is at is a nice walk with panoramic views of the Carquinez Strait, San Pablo Bay, Mt Tam, Napa River, Vallejo, Napa, Sonoma, and Marin counties. The preserve is run by volunteers. There are yearly events such as nature walks, FlyWay Festival, Nightmare Island, OSilent Fright Christmas, and many other events to raise money for the up -keep of the preserve. Donations and volunteers are welcomed. I enjoy running up the hill with the great views. Good spot for walk or run to get exercise.

We went here on a hot weekend in June (high of 100). Beautiful place to walk around. Interesting dynamic and group of people running the place. Everyone is really nice and theres a lot of character. Watch out for rattlesnakes. When we were there, someones dog was bitten by a rattlesnake and my wife and I had to rush them down to the bottom of the hill in our car. So keep your pet on a short leash and stay in the middle of the path. Dont let your dog explore or lunge at things. Wear sunscreen. Use mosquito repellent as well. This is a neat place but just keep in mind, a nature preserves job is to preserve nature so that means there are lots of critters out there. That also means you should be respectful and stay on paths.

Cars race over the speed limit in to the preserve. Yesterday 7/1/17 a man had his chaise lounge set up in the historic Navy graveyard, and three dogs running free un-leashed Pooping on the Graves of our Heros. Just in time for Fourth of July. The people that run this place rarely have their dogs on a leash. VALLEJOS LEASH LAW APPLIES. I HAVE BEEN CHASED ON MY BICYCLE BY UNLEASHED PITBULLS IN THE PRESERVE..complaining to the so-called staff is a waste, they look at you like you are a criminal. They obey no laws there. Its a Fraud.

The preserve is one of the things I love most about Vallejo. I go to the old oak trees when I need to see a forest instead of grassland. I love it so much Im getting married there this year. Yes, it has its rough edges and needs some care, but for a fully volunteer managed park, it is a gem. Hopefully, the State, or Vallejo, or a private group will recognize the park for its value to the public and invest in its renewal. Until then, I thank the volunteers who keep the gate open, and the veteran rose garden watered.

This place is definitely worth a visit! Its not crowded at all (this is a good thing) and the views from the top of Carquinez Strait and Mare Island Naval station are worth the short, easy hike up on a paved road mostly. Take the 1/3 hike down to the bunkers, its worth it! The ghost ship is not what I expected but sort of interesting nonetheless. Take the kids and enjoy some nature!

Despite the leash laws, many people let their dogs run free, in the preserve. Some of them are very aggressive towards other people and other dogs. These dogs scare away nesting birds, and poop in the Navy Cemetery, where heros are buried and two close relatives of Francis Scott Key. The cemetery is in need of much tender loving care.

Military graveyard weekend tour interesting for history enthusiasts, free parking. Although has college & houses, most of island is clearly visible as abandoned WWII naval shipyard buildings & looks depressing that all that space/infrastructure goes to waste so close to downtown Vallejo.

Great place for a dog walk (if you have a well behaved dog and pick up after them). Awesome views! Bird watching. The place is actually dependant on donations to stay alive so they have a donation box at the gate to toss a couple bucks into. We love this place!

Hidden gem on the southern tip of Mare Island. Cemetery founded in 1858. Ruins of the battery. And more
