Staff in the lobby are really helpful and nice upon check in and check out. Had to wait a bit to check out since there was only one person helping the guests. The hotel wasnt so hard to find (gps helps a lot as well as google images of the place). There are plenty of spaces to park, however, Sunday night parking, the lot was full. I did not venture around the hotel cause I just wanted to stay introverted in my room. I was on the 4th floor facing the pool area. Pretty convienent to walk from my car to my room. I stayed in a standard room with a king sized bed. The room itself is really small, but its not like I need the space. There is a mini fridge (wine cooler?) underneath the table. No microwave which sucks if you wanted to reheat your food. The bathroom is small. The shower is beautiful but I wished there was more shelving for your own shower things and maybe an upstep thing so you can rest your leg up to wash your legs instead of bending over. The closet was a nice size. Complimentary soaps conditioner and lotion. The bed was super comfortable with 5 fluffy pillows. The thermostat is a must because without the air flowing, the room will get pretty stuffy. There is a nice tv with 40 channels. The iPod dock clock radio is cool if you want some music playing while you sleep. I ordered room service and they were quick to bring my food. Kind of pricy. $80 for a Mac and cheese appetizer, steak meal and two Stellas. Still wasnt sure what to do with the plates when I finished the meal so I just left it in my room. As for the room itself... Its mostly quiet. By mostly I mean that I havent heard a peep from people talking. I do hear wheels rolling from the cleaning cart or from luggage rolling around every 10 minutes or so, but having the tv on helped with that. I also hear people walking (especially if they have heels or a heavy step). The room was sound proof enough so that I dont hear neighbors toilet or showers running. For the price, it wasnt worth staying here. Id pay a little bit less than $400 for two nights ($300 at most) to stay here. It was a nice getaway though! Ps. My "do not disturb" door sign kept falling off the door knob >:(

Definition of Paradox: A paradox is a statement that apparently contradicts itself and yet might be true. Funny because the hotel Paradox was just that, it was a Hotel or maybe a Motel but calls itself a Hotel... My wife and I just returned from a romantic weekend away in Santa Cruz, after what I thought was a good amount of research, I had decided to book a room at the "Hotel" Paradox, my bad. Lets start with the Hotel itself. Basically its not a bad looking hotel/motel, as you pull up out front it is a simple white block building nothing special just plain. We checked in and everything seemed great. As we pulled away to park around back as we were instructed, we noticed an odd resemblance to a Motel 6. I mean it had all been painted white, and black. But other than that it was a Motel. All the rooms are facing out to the walkway where little carts go back and fourth to clean the rooms, it was kind of funny. My wife actually compared it to a scene from CSI Miami. Anyway we headed on up to our room, and low and behold it was a typical Motel room, I mean the exact same room you would stay in for $39.99 a night with free adult movies. The only real difference was a few decorations and some paint, other than that the layout was identical to a low budget Motel. Not that there is anything wrong with that at $39.99 a night, but we were charged $266.00 dollars a night! Overall the Hotel/Motel was not bad. It was just unfortunate for the price. It had the most uncomfortable beds, no baths and the light from the hallway outside shined in like in a Motel all night.

The Good: The hotel was very clean, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the bed was very comfortable. There is a great outdoor pool and hot tub, with an outside bar as well, which offered a bit of a "beach experience." There is plenty of parking around the hotel with a good size lot in the back. The Bad: The park next to the hotel is the sleeping location of many homeless, but other than the first time I walked through the park I was never talked to. It still made me uncomfortable each time I walked through the park, and I went out of my way to try to avoid any interactions. The restaurant in the hotel offers a good breakfast selection that tastes good, but the dinner selection is a bit lacking and wasnt well prepared or flavored. I wont likely eat dinner in the restaurant on future visits. The floor of the shower was made of rocks which were not even and if you werent careful, could cause a bit of discomfort if you stepped in just the wrong place. The Ugly: The light level in the room at night was horrible. There is a lot of light that bleeds past the curtain next to the door and lights up the room. I could literally see everything in the room without trying to hard. This made it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep. I will admit to be very sensitive to light at night, but even my wife commented on how bright the room was, so this wasnt a specific issue just with me.

The number of times Ive stayed at Hotel Paradox is now well above double digits, and I continue to hold this "boutique" hotel in high regard (air quotes because Paradox is technically a Marriott-owned hotel). The front desk/housekeeping, accommodations/facilities, restaurant, and overall ambiance are all excellent. Special shout out to Bernadette, one of the many friendly and helpful front-desk staff. During one of my stays, I was that one guest... you know, the difficult one, with all the "special" accommodation requests. Regardless, Bernadette handled my requests with aplomb and grace. I would not have been so hospitable if I had been in her situation. But then again, thats consistently what you will get when you stay at Hotel Paradox: great customer service. When I stay at Hotel Paradox, I usually do so with the intent of spending a lot of time at its outdoor pool/spa/restaurant/bar area. Its relaxing, fun (even has a ping-pong table and corn-hole), and "attractive" (generally speaking, depending on the crowd) all at the same time. Hotel Paradox is also very much in walking distance to Downtown Santa Cruz, so its easy enough to hit up the pool during the afternoon, then the Santa Cruz nightlife afterward. If you are not exactly a high-roller, but would like to stay in a trendy, friendly, and well-appointed hotel, this is THE place to reserve in Santa Cruz.

The Room Cleaners left a really dirty towel on my night stand which wasnt too bad considering I knew they tried to clean the room. After a night spent in the hotel my mother came over to take a shower while drying off she discovered a stain on the towel in which was used to whipe someones ass yes everyone it was a poop stain.... 0.o after we got that sorted unbelievably we were hungery so we decided to check out Solair the cafe in the Hotel, good thing we were still disturb from the poop stain that they were impolite about seating us because they had just had "a group of invisible people come in." With a crap load of empty table because we all know it takes 2 people to fill up 12 empty tables. However the room was very pretty if my bed didnt feel like a fat person died in it fue to the divit on the right side of the very huge king size bed I dont know about you! But I dont sleep on one side of a king size bed... Not only that but I guess a 19 year old with no car yes I have no life I was getting charged for parking when I have nothing to park which was 10 dollars a night and theres no PARKING!!
