So much fun! Met some really awesome veterans with stories and pictures. What an honor to meet Admiral Abele at 95 years young (see photos) with photos of his ship damaged by bomb at sea that returned to US got repaired and lived to fight some more. What an honor to thank him for his service...so moving. Met veteran of Midway as well from post Viet Nam era visiting from Cincinnati OH who is now a police officer there. Ended up getting membership because from 11-4 still lots to see! Tips: Discounts for online purchase, students, AAA members. Obviously veterans..USS Midway veterans get free lifetime membership! (As they should) They use admission towards year membership. $90 for family of 4..we have 2-3...thats $3.75 a month for 2..$3.75 and it goes to maintaining the Midway Museum. What a deal! Got there at 11 a.m. thought def no parking but got lucky in parking lot in front of Maritime Museum..also great!...and we have blue spot so free all day. Wear comfy shoes, a smile for other visitors you may bump, and I will def take backpack next time if I want to use handset to listen to history as we go. Its like the Zoo or any museum..food is you know $8 for hotdog and chips but nice quality, friendly staff. ..and it goes back to museum. Starbucks there but doesnt take Starbucks card, give stars or reward drinks (sorry). Did flight simulation for $6 ea...wish was longer but fun..lots of free things to climb in but line can get long with little kids that rather remain inside the displays. Docents everywhere..fun, family friendly...you CAN Touch all of It! Haha no hovering over kids and special kids not to get into or touch stuff ..also wheelchair friendly with elevators etc... How have we lived here 30 years and never gone?!!! Go!! Thank a veteran too! P.s. they close ticket booth at 4 p.m. and ship at 4:30 so get early start.

I was absolutely astounded by the quality of this museum. From actual logbooks to a full scale replicas of the control room, animatronic captains and actual recordings of shipboard communication over the comm system, the Midway museum was an absolute treat. Our kids of 8 and 10 were captivated with how many controls, dials, ladders, and drawers are still functioning in an interactive sense, giving them an immersive sensation of flying the carriers planes, living in the crew berth, or dining in the captains quarters. The views from the flight deck were breathtaking. It can get quite warm on and in the ship, even in a day when its only 80 and sunny outside. But that does give an atmospheric sense of muggy vaporous air within the ship. Nothing like the 130 degree, choking air of the actual sailors. Meandering through the narrow passages from engine room to pilots ready room gives an incredible sense of tiny human mice snaking through a Swiss cheese of passages in the massive steel bulk of the vessel. Absolutely breathtaking. Didnt even get to se the control tower, and still entirely worth it. A must go museum for anyone without kids or with kids above around 7 years of age. Please dont bring toddlers and younger; they were really suffering from the heat and tight quarters.

Just an amazing experience! You could spend days here and not be able to take it all in. Even if you have no interest in war history you will be amazed at how well organized this museum is and how rich the experience is. Having so many veterans there, who actually served on the ship makes it so authentic. They are all very welcoming and love to tell stories and answer questions. We brought our 8-year old twins and they were also in awe of all they saw. They enjoyed everything from tying knots, going on a discovery tour, getting their wings in a little mock ceremony which was very well done, seeing all the aircraft and helicopters (many of which you can go into!) on the flight deck, and doing the bridge tour. You can touch and feel everything, making you truly feel like part of history. The newly opened aircraft mission control room is amazing with actual Desert Storm sorties on the board, and a veteran in the room who served at the time. Im no fan of war as a solution for conflicts and Im as liberal as they come, but I was still truly amazed with this museum experience and I would definitely visit again next time Im in San Diego.

One of the best museums you can visit in San Diego or even anywhere in the country. Admission costs about $20 (although there are cheaper options for students, elderly and youth). You get in-and-out privileges. There are 3 main areas to cover - (1) The middle level where you enter - has a nice theatre which gives a good background on why this aircraft carrier is called USS Midway. Contains few fighter air crafts which took part in the Battle of Midway. And a few video terminals which provide interesting information. Has paid simulation rides for those interested. A small cafe, gift store & photo store are also on this level. (2) The upper level is where a majority of the aircrafts are housed. There are two ongoing talk shows which talk about landing and take-off of flights on and from this ship. It becomes more clear from here on the enormous scale of this ship. (3) The lower level is like an underground city. Hosts areas for laundry, kitchen, medical and dental clinics, and more.

The Midway is awesome! You get to walk around at leisure in a serious air craft carrier. You dont have to be held to a rigid tour group or limited to time. You can just stroll around and see it all. There are docents around that can tell you all about it and how it all worked. They have it all fixed up as well with dummies in places and signage. The top deck is a aircraft museum with jets and helicopters all over it. It is a pleasure to browse them all and hear stories about flying them from the docents. I really think that the mechanical achievement of man is on display big time here. Some day we will look back on this kind of thing with awe and no idea how we did any of it. Take advantage of the time we live in now to see it before we look at it as alien placed advanced architecture from some other people like the folks in the Middle Ages looked at Aqua Ducts and roads and concrete.
