Besides the amusing one mile distance between two 7-Elevens, the excellent people watching available at the bustling Target and the occasional drug bust, there’s not much to see in Arleta. But what many residents are unaware of is the existence of Branford Park, an unpretentious and decent patch of grass nestled between Beachy Avenue and Branford Street. On a recent Sunday afternoon, the lazy park was flooded with families for an annual car show, sponsored by Victory Outreach, a local Christian Evangelical church. Men clung from the chain link fence to get a better look at the car tricks. Desperate for a bird’s eye view, one man climbed a pole and enjoyed the show from above. But while most of the park’s visitors were more interested in the day’s festivities, Danny Ortiz, 24, preferred to push his five-year-old son on the swings. “I like watching him play on the same swings I did,” said Ortiz, who grew up in Arleta and often visited the park as a boy. But in the ten years since Ortiz moved to Simi Valley, “the park is the same old thing,” he said. While it may be true that nothing has changed, Branford Park still has plenty to offer. The park has basketball, tennis and volleyball courts as well as soccer and baseball fields. The children’s play area, which is where Ortiz played with his son, has swings and slides for the younger visitors. The play area is in good condition. According to the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, the park also has an auditorium capable of seating 400 people. Public restrooms at city parks are notoriously known for being unkempt and dirty, but Branford Park’s restrooms were surprisingly clean that day, perhaps because of the event and the many available portable toilets lined up nearby. At first glance, Branford Park seems to be like any other Los Angeles park, but Edelmira Hernandez likes it so much that she visits the park every day. “I come here everyday to be out in the open fresh air,” said Hernandez in Spanish. “It’s really calm, there has never been any problems.” The 56-year-old Van Nuys resident comes to the park everyday with her husband, “hasta cuando hace frio,” she said, “Even when it’s cold.” Hernandez, who was unaware of the car show, said that other parks don’t interest her as much. Watching from her beach chair, Hernandez didn’t dare get any closer to the crowd enjoying the final moments of the show. “I’m afraid that I will fall or that they will knock me down,” said Hernandez, who suffered from a stroke a couple of years ago. A man stopped to say hello to Hernandez. “He’s a friend of mine,” she said as she waved. Branford Park is located at 1 3306 Branford St in Arleta. Plenty of street parking is available.
