Highland Park Golf Course in an urban albeit pretty setting. It is an old course, having been established in 1903 as the first Country Club of Birmingham (which moved later to Mountain Brook). The course design was supposedly influenced by Donald Ross and you can see some classic Ross design elements. The course was shortened to make room for development and, therefore, it is now very tight. The greens and fairways as in good condition, particularly given how much use it gets. My main issue is that it is a dangerous place to play. It was designed in the gutta percha golf ball era, meaning the balls did not travel very far. Now, a shot a bit off line lands in another fairway, endangering other golfers. I was almost hit by balls several times and also almost hit others. As an example, I teed off on a blind teeshot, drove forward, and found five carts in my fairway, none of whom were actually playing the whole I was on. In addition, this is a public course and many players have no idea about golf etiquette.

Great place for all types of golfers. Years ago, the course got a bad wrap for always being busy and over crowded. The staff at Highland does a great job monitoring the pace and ensuring that everyone has a great time. I cant remember the last time I played it in OVER 4 hours! And the golf pros are always out riding around and speaking to the customers. Great experience.

Well-manicured course that takes advantage of he space available as well as the geography of Birmingham. Short but fun to play. Rates are a touch steep considering the ease of the course but its accessible and in a convenient location.

The staff is very friendly and the course was in pretty good shape. Its a short course but its still fairly challenging. The greens were a little bumpy.
