This is one of Norfolks finest secrets. Located on the water, a wetlands project, garden and an art museum that show cases a very historic collection plus a rotating emerging artist gallery. There are also 6 local artist in residency in their Studio Artist Program and a the Visual Arts School which provides the community with numerous classes ranging from traditional art making to weaving to up-cycled mixed media. Then there are the exquisite grounds that illustrate numerous gardens full of heirloom plants. The events held on the property range from oyster roasts to outdoor films to sunset parties with live music and the all hallows eve childrens extravaganza. The location is also available to host weddings, parties and fundraisers.

My boyfriend surprised me by taking me and our puppy to the Hermitage right before sunset. This was my first visit and because we had the puppy we couldnt go inside. However, they do have posts with puppy clean-up bags which I found very friendly. I thought it was so beautiful. You can see oyster environment preservation balls from the paths. And there is little information plaques about the different things on the property. It is in a quiet, secluded area, but the shipyard in the background would set a formal tone off. The grounds are clean and beautiful even after this snowfall.

The Hermitage is a gem. The grounds are beautiful and large enough for a stroll. Sunsets offer a waterfront show nightly. The museum brings in quality exhibits and promotes creativity with their craft nights and art school. Event parking is street side and thats a drag (for visitors and neighbors alike).

This is most likely one of the most overlooked gems of the region. The Hermitage Museum is beautifully situated on the Elizabeth River. Acres of gardens, woods, and coastal environments while the house contains a deep and eclectic fine art collection. A great place to take out of town guests.

Host of Burning Man Nights, an outdoor music and arts experience for the summer of 2017, showcasing local artists, supporting the local arts and talents, as well as displaying old historical items and architecture. Great place to bring family and friends. Pleasant sunsets and views.

Victoria was my tour guide and did an excellent job explaining all of the hand carved wood, Southeast Asian art, and explaining the family mansion. I loved the touring the Mansion as well as walking the grounds and seeing the Burning Man traveling exhibit.

Beautiful grounds and very interesting house. We were lucky to hit upon free admission day. I might not have been so ready to pay full admission now that I know that the inside is really limited. But it is very interesting.

Ive visited this quaint little morsel of hidden history in Norfolk, since I was in high school. Im still impressed with their gardens, grounds and of course the art on display. The hermitage building itself is a work of art.

We first came to this place for the summer music series on the river and fell in love. Its such a great place all on its own and then add in the fact it is a museum and has art. Beautiful location and great staff :)
