Finally, I made it to Barboursville. I had heard about this winery while going to school nearby but never made the trek till now. My friends and I rented a house in Elkton and decided to check out Barboursville Winery for a day. The winery is spacious and looks pretty driving in, especially with the rose bushes at the end of every row of grapes and the backdrop of the mountains. Tasting is only $7 and you get a fair share of wines to taste. 2 sparklings, 7 whites, 6 reds, and 4 dessert wines. My favorites were the Chardonnay 2013, Riesling 2013, Cabernet Sauvignon 2013, Cabernet Franc Reserve, and pretty much all the dessert wines (Cabernet Blanc, Rosato, Phileo, and of course, the Passito). Incidentally, my boyfriend and I were at the Mount Vernon Spring Wine Festival just a week ago and Barboursville was there, so we were able to sample and purchase some of their wines there including the Chardonnay, Cab Sauvignon, and Passito. I enjoyed being able to taste the other wines that werent at the festival though. I thought the Riesling was a nice floral character, and the Cab Franc Reserve was fantastically well-balanced with notes of berries and plums. I also liked tasting the other dessert wines. Aside from the Passito which Ive had, I thought the Rosato and Phileo were both incredibly rich, fruity, lovely dessert wines. The tasting room is open every day of the year except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Day. Open Monday through Saturday from 10am-5pm and Sunday from 11am-5pm. Tours of the winery are offered on Saturday and Sunday from 12-4pm on the hour. We started outside the tasting room and ended at the Octagon Barrel Room, a permanent exhibit of their signature wine. The tour was relatively quick and unlike most wine tours Ive been on, devoid of tasting wines. The majority of the time spent on the tour was in the production area. On this 800+ acres estate, you can also take self-guided tours of Barboursville Ruins. This historic landmark (on the National Register of Historic Places) is the remains of a mansion designed by Thomas Jefferson. Its just a short walk from the tasting room to the ruins. When we went, there had previously been a wedding held there, so there were rows of chairs and flowers, making it a very picturesque setting. Additionally, there is a restaurant, Palladio, and an inn located on the estate. The grounds are beautiful and the view is spectacular. Barboursville Winery is considered one of Virginias elite wineries, having won five Governors Cups (2012 Octagon, 2008 Malvaxia, 2010 Nebbiolo, 2010 Octagon, 2009 Octagon 12th Edition). If youre in the area, I would highly recommend stopping by.

The first time we visited the winery in 2016, we were a little too late to enjoy a full tasting. However, the staff was kind enough to allow us a mini tasting at the bar. The wines were delicious and the staff was extremely helpful with suggestions. We left with a case and a half of wine! We just visited again on Easter day 2017. We were happily surprised to find them open on a holiday. We were seated in their "library" which has a beautiful view and access to the porch. As a bonus, they had an Easter egg hunt which our children, ages 4 and 6, thoroughly enjoyed. We wanted to do a tasting and were thrilled with the selection we had to choose from. The staff were friendly and welcoming and even had juice and snacks for the kids. The room was comfortable and well appointed. We didnt feel rushed and even had cheese and meat platters with our tasting. I wish I could remember everyones names because they really deserve the applause. They went above and beyond to make our visit a special one. We plan on visiting them every time were in the area.

We went to Barboursville Vineyards with great expectations. After all, it is the oldest vineyard in Virginia and its wines have won many awards. Unfortunately, it did not live up to its hype. When we walked in, the tasting room was a chaotic assemblage of tasting counters. There was no plan or coordination; you just found a line and waited until your turn. The staff pouring the wine went through a canned script that sounded impressive but when we started asking questions, they had no idea what they were pouring. There were many wines to try for our $7.00 tasting package but none were memorable. When we asked about their award winning wines, we were told they were not included in the $7.00 tasting and we would have to buy the $40.00 tasting to try them. If you are looking for a low cost experience to taste a lot of wines, this is your place. If you want to spend a leisurely time tasting great wines with assistance from knowledgeable staff, go someplace else.

Barboursville was a pretty vineyard on a fall afternoon. Walk into the tasting room and its what we say in the south, a CF... people are unsure where to pay to start the tasting and then the tastings are done by 4 different people and you make your way down the line, which sounds simple, but when there are large groups there then you basically walk up, get your small pour of wine, and have to get out of the way of the next guy. There is no learning about the wines and no camaraderie with the employees like you find at most vineyards that have one person per a group serving. I will say the reason I would go back is we got to taste 13 wines for $5...so it was a great deal... If you happen to go on a random day or hit it at the right time then I think it would be a lovely experience... our experience was not so much. (Try their olive oil if you go, very delicious on the saltine crackers they set out.)

Adored this place. It was such a lovely drive from our place near lake Anna. It is a large place that sits up on a hill. There is plenty of parking. They were very busy when we arrived. The gal at the front desk noted that what we see is actually slow for them. I tasted over 20 wines. The individuals pouring the samples were friendly and knowledgeable. I ended up buying a bottle of their Cabernet Franc 2013. It has to be the best wine I have had in years. I also got a glass "to go". We drove down the hill to the ruins and walked around. It was a wonderful visit. Oh they have a patio but a group of 20 something females insisted on saying the word, "like" several times per sentence so we walked from that area.

So we just got back from a weekend of wine tours with friends and Barboursville was our first of the vineyards we visited. Overall, the experience itself is okay - its a bit like a tasting assembly line with 20 wines in a row, and you walk through with a list of explanations and the employees just pouring your wine. But, the vineyard tour was nice and the grounds are lovely, if a little corporate-seeming. The four stars are because it did have some tasty wines - especially the whites - and it was one the few places we bought bottles to bring home from. If this is the only vineyard you are visiting, Id go elsewhere, but if its one of many its definitely worth being on your list.
