The park is great for both runners and family people. Its nearly ideal for family people who are runners (or bicycle riders, or inline-skaters, or joggers, or brisk-walkers)! First and foremost reason I come to this park is for its extensive playground. While it doesnt have much of a unified complex of climbing, sliding, and jumping modules, it has separate large slide, separate large climbing thingie, and separate swings, spring horsies, and carousel! Second reason I come to this park is for its creek. The Salado Creek Greenway is an amazing running/biking/walking route. It stretches, in my estimate, at least 5 miles one way: 2.5 miles north-west of Blanco Rd, and about 2.5 miles south-east. About 60% of the trail is fully shaded throughout the day, making for a more comfortable activity than could be under this Texas sun thats trying to kill you. Now to the cons of the park. I count two. The first negative thing about the park is the playground is weakly shaded. The swings, part of the jumping/sliding modules are almost fully open to the sun beyond 9am, which makes for a sweaty and unejoyable time with your children. Second con is poorly distributed and badly maintained drinking fountains along the running route. Yeah, yeah, I know I should bring the water with me, and I do. But sometimes I just wish there were drinking fountains at least every mile or so along the route. Running in 90+ degrees with 80+% humidity can be quite dehydrating after the first couple of miles. Other than that, this is a very practical and useful park, designed to satisfy nature, fitness, and play needs of the whole family!

The park is great and well maintained. Most of the people are nice and responsible. The dog park is separated into a small dog park and a large dog park. There are rules posted prior to the entrance to the dog park that any responsible and caring dog owner should read and comply with. However, because many dog owners (especially those that come on the weekends) are irresponsible, there are numerous dog fights that occur. People bring food into the park, which is prohibited, and most dogs attracted to the smell will gather around and a fight can ensue. Other people will bring dogs who have not been socialized into the park on a leash which also typically leads to a fight. There are a variety of dogs in the park and no breed restrictions: huskies, "pitbulls", german shepherds, Dobermans, etc. The worst thing about the park is that the park police cannot issue any citations for breaking the rules--even if one dog ends up being mauled to death. So far, there havent been many reported deaths; however, some of the issues have been: one dog lost an eye due to a dog fight over a tennis ball, another dog had its leg chewed up in a dog fight, another dog had its neck torn into as a result of another fight, etc. Overall, there arent many problems in the park when there are mature and responsible dog owners.

Love the park and the amenities, but beware the bikers and pet owners. The bike riders do not look out for the kids and dont get off their bike on the section that has big words on the ground telling them to get off so kids stay safe. Pet owners for the most part keep their pets away from the playground, but there are some that dont read the signs or just dont care. That being said, the equipment always seems to be in good repair, and the paths taken care of and cleared of debry. Plenty of picnic tables and grill pits for birthday parties. It seems to be first come first serve though no reservations, which i personally like. Nothing like getting there, setting everything up and then being kicked out because someone else reserved it and there is no warning. Big enough parking lot on both ends, lots of walking trails and a learning center. Bathrooms in good condition.

We love the play area off of NW Military. Its the first park that Ive been fully comfortable with allowing my almost 2-year-old to play on the equipment (usually parks are geared only for slightly older children). We like it so much that we really want to have his birthday party there. My only hesitation is the extreme lack of parking. The last 3 times we have been there, we have had trouble finding a parking spot and ended up parking on the road next to the dog park despite the no parking signs (lots of other cars were parked there too). We were unclear as to whether the no parking signs were for the whole road or just one side of the road. We really expected the play area to be packed, but it wasnt. Fix the parking issues, and I think this park would deserve a full 5 star rating.

Very nice park, the play ground equipment is for kids a little older then two like my child so he was having a hard time playing on most of the equipment. The playground is covered in rubber flooring making it very safe if you fall. Restrooms were close, and plenty of picnic tables and fire pits surrounded by beautiful trees that provide much needed shade. Im not sure if you have to reserve the tables or if its first come first serve. The grounds were very clean and surrounded by a fence. There are also a bunch of walking, cycling, running, dog trails throughout the park. I would recommened for kids older then 2.

I live near by so I take my dog often. Im from the inner city so I didnt really care for the park cause I kept comparing it to Brackenridge, San Pedro and Roosevelt parks which are all gems of San Antonio. However, one recent spring day my dog and I ventured on the new Savannah trail and fell in love with it along with the natural grass area near the Ecology Center. I resented that the park did not preserve the name of the Voelker family but I am grateful to all of the volunteers that have turned this area of San Antonio into an oasis of peace. THANKS!

Probably my favorite park I visited on a first and recent trip to the SA area. Easy, but fantastic trails offering up a variety of landscapes... from green forests to areas flirting with the desert. I greatly enjoyed relaxing at the Earthy, yet contemporary facilities including artistically-placed, concrete picnic tables. Really an asset for nearby neighborhoods and even a destination park for those not nearby. This review is based on the East side of the park (soon to be connected, but still separated from the West side by a highway).

We, my wife and I are newcomers retirees and we have move here from Plano, TX. We consider ourselves lucky to have moved close to Hardberger Park. We take our granddaughters to Phil Hardberger Park almost three times a week. The Park have the most beautiful trails, with live Deers passing by you as you walk. The trails run all the way north to Huebner Rd and to the South Walkers Ranch Heritage Park. I believe is a good five miles total length. Plenty of sitting and rest areas full of trees. plants and foliage.

Its a great area thats spoiled by a woefully inadequate parking lot for its location and all of the activities that take place here, especially on the weekends. Come early to avoid the "gridlock". Bring your truck or anything with decent ride height to avoid two unnecessarily-large speed bumps that are capable of scraping/bashing the undercarriage of practically every coupe and sedan on the road. I used to go for the dog park, which is great, but got tired of the parking issues.
