I’ve had many wonderful experiences at Minerva’s in Sioux Falls – family gatherings, business dinners and meetings. But I am very disappointed by Minerva’s at the Ramkota Hotel in Watertown, SD. I had a bad experience three years ago. But recently, I went back again. Here is what happened at the Watertown Minerva’s on Saturday, July 3, 2010. My wife and I arrived around 6:45pm. We sat in the bar and ordered $7.50 glasses of wine. When the wine arrived, we thought it was a joke – there was maybe a half an inch of wine in each glass. I asked the waitress if there was a mistake and she said: “No. We don’t pour our glasses very full because this way is better for your pallet. You can smell the wine while you drink it.” She was not concerned about our complaint. My wife insisted that we leave. She left, but I stayed and ordered dinner. When the same waitress brought my food, she said it was too bad my wife had left and she said: “Here is your steak, dear.” Her tone was condescending and phony. Next she put her hand on my shoulder and started rubbing me a bit and said: “Hope you like it, honey.” It felt like she was offering me a lap-dance. Then, still lingering at my table, she said: “Enjoy it, dear.” I said bluntly: “Don’t ever touch me again or call me dear.” She had a look on her face like we were in high school and I had just broken up with her. She didn’t say a word, just walked away and I never saw her again. The meal itself was a mixed bag, far below what I expect at Minerva’s. The steak was a very nice cut and was nicely prepared. But the baked potato was lukewarm and stale. The tomato bisque soup was way too salty. As I was finishing my dinner, Aaron, a manager of some sort, was walking around the tables asking patrons about their meals. I told him about my experience. He sat down joined me in my booth. Aaron said he was sorry about the weird waitress but defended her by pointing out “…she is from a small town and does that all the time with the regulars.” In other words, her behavior was not unusual. To compensate for the skimpy first glass of wine, Aaron gave me a free glass of the house burgundy. But, I never got the sense that Aaron really cared. The same company that owns and operates Minerva’s in Sioux Falls owns Minerva’s in Watertown. But beware: the exceptional customer service, value and quality found at the Sioux Falls Minerva’s is sorely lacking in Watertown.

The restaurant itself is beautiful and my servers were friendly, but they were so painfully slow, from beginning to end, seating to getting me my check. There was Confusion and no changes of pricing for any substitutions or changes. Example: I order $30 steak dinner, comes with 2 sides I only want one. I eat and get my ticket and see its full price, then simply ask for my 2nd side that I would have to pay for, then a half hour later, I get my half cold half hearted side after almost being charged for an extra side. I would not recommend it very highly and I wont be returning. The steak was average.

Had a wonderful time of fellowship with family and kinfolk visiting from Arizona. And the food and desserts were well prepared and delicious. However, my husband and I have a suggestion for the Meatloaf dinner. GRAVY needs to be added to the meat and mashed potatoes. Both were too dry without it.

Horrid prices for the amount of food you get. Nice romantic eatery if you have $$$ and dont mind being inside a hotel! I wont go there again!
