Im not sure why so many people hate on this venue. Over the years I have been able to see some FANTASTIC bands play here for a completely reasonable price. This place keeps the punk rock spirit alive and I super appreciate that. It is also nice that this place is on the small side so its pretty easy to get up close to the act you are seeing. This is important for someone like me who is only 52. For those who wish to view a show from a higher vantage point, there is a balcony. If you are seeing a popular act and wish to watch from the balcony, Id advise arriving early as it tends to reach capacity. For shows that are all ages they have a 21 and up area with a bar. They also allow for people who have finished their drinks to easily get to the all-ages area near the stage. The energy here always seems to be great. This is even the case when a show is far from sold out. It is also awesome that this venue is set up in a way that allows for easy stage diving and crowd surfing. Not that there are activities that I partake in, they just add to the crazy energy of seeing a punk show. Nothing like this would ever happen at the Crystal Ballroom. The band lineup is almost always posted here. This is fantastic if you wish to go to the little bar in the front of the building to enjoy some adult beverages while some of the opening bands are playing. They also usually have a coat check if you are seeing a show in the winter and wish to rid yourself of cumbersome outerwear while you enjoy the show. There are not many things better than getting to so see some live music. Hawthorne Theater will continue to be a place I frequent to support some of my favorite bands.

Went here for the 2010 Surf Roots Tour. The bands were good. No complaints about the entertainment. This is a review of this god awful venue and the people that run it. This place has NO AC. It was 90 degrees outside so the theater felt like a sauna. A sweaty, sticky sauna. It felt like 100 degrees in there and that is being nice about it. In reality, In reality, I think hell is colder than this place. They had ONE 36 inch fan in the back that worked for 5 minutes at a time because it would overheat. Idiots. Does anyone here have an education here. Their carding/ticket taking system is absurd. To go into the adjoining 21+ lounge you have to get carded and stamped on your right wrist. To go into the theater you have to present your tickets and get a stamp on your left wrist, THEN to get into the theaters 21+ bar area, you have to get carded again and get a THIRD stamp. Hello??? If I have a stamp on my right wrist that means I have already been carded for drinking age. Again, does anyone with an education own this or work here? Yes, the bathrooms. 1 crapper and one urinal for the guys and 3 stalls for the girls. A smart, educated person would have more bathroom facilities than that, but again they dont work here. Apparently janitors dont either because the restrooms smelled and looked like a rest area bathroom. The only way this gets a star is for $3 domestics on tap. Smart people would take advantage of this venue and install some type of cooling system, put more bathrooms, and invent a more common sense stamping system.

Awful, AWFUL experience at this TRASHY place!! Went to a concert here and had an all around bad experience and no one in the way of a Manager or Owner seems to care. I have reached out via their email contact on their website and still havent heard a word from anyone! I was threatened by another concert goer (a very pointed physical threat) because my friend and I were talking and singing during the show and someone in front of us was irritated. I walked away from the potentially bad situation to go an look for a bouncer and it took me about 5 mins to find one. Bouncers should be everywhere and one shouldnt have to hunt one down when theres a problem. Had I not been mature enough to walk away from the situation....there would have been a huge incident on HTs hands and I probably would have been hauled off in an ambulance. This place is dark, crowded, dirty and very UNSAFE for a woman to be unless you bring your own big bouncers!! The bouncers there are worthless and dont seem to care about their patrons. I will never spend another dime at this venue and I plan to call OLCC and speak with them about what happened. I will also be sharing my story on all social media sites. If your a woman...and if you want to feel SAFE going to a concert....this is NOT the venue to be at.

On Sept. 5th 2012, I went to see my friends play the early free show in the side bar, and catch the main Act, AgainstMe in the headline area. Saw the Montclaire and Lost city in the over 21 early side, had a good time drinking with my friends. Then I Paid to see Against me (cover $18) and told the lady that sold me the tickets that I would be back to see the main show at 10:00. She stamped my hand twice, as the first stamp wasnt very good. I then helped my friends load thier gear into thier van and went and had dinner with them up the road. I Came back about 9:45 to see the headline act, and was informed by the security dude with the crappy piercing in the nose and checkerboard plug in his ear that there was no re-entry. Even though I hadnt fully entered the first time. Then the second bouncer, an overwieght asian looking fellow, said that I had already been in four times and that I needed to move along. As they pointed at the no re-entry sign. I asked for my money back and they just sneered. So as far as I am concerned this is a low life establishment that hires idiots with absolutely no sense of customer service or common courtesy whatsoever. I will never again spend a dime in this place, and if this review saves anyone else some grief, I will feel vindicated.

I have been to shows beyond count in my lifetime, including some of the "heaviest" acts out there; Meshuggah, Lamb of God, Six Feet Under, etc. At each and every one of those shows, there were security staff. They were generally relegated to helping crowd surfers over the barricades, assisting people with medical emergencies, and providing help to the crowd as needed. However, thats not what security does at the Hawthorne. No no, at the Hawthorne, security is there to taunt, abuse, and antagonize the crowd. Their security staff can only be described as the worst pile of meathead douchebags this side of the Mississippi. More than once, I witnessed as they pushed women out of the way to make their way through the crowd for what appeared to be no reason at all. Apparently, its common practice for these dudes to get juiced up before their shifts, in order to maximize their power trips as much as possible. These idiots belong in a zoo and should be fired for assault and battery. Oh, and the sound sucked. Worst venue ever.
