I love this museum. Yesterday was my first visit to the Brooklyn Museum in my adult life. I had this idea in my head that this museum would be inferior to the Moma & Met on the other side of the east river. That idea couldnt have been more incorrect. In fact, after one short visit to the Brooklyn Museum it has become my favorite museum in New York City. In short, I just found the exhibits in this museum to be more relevant to my sensibilities. For example, the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit resonated with me. Basquiat was the first artist that I felt had a message that related to me so It was great to be able to take a peak into his note books. The Sneaker culture exhibit was the main event for me. As someone who grew up immersed in sneaker cutler this exhibit was a treat. I think the museum did a good job of conveying the cultural impact the sneaker game has had in the last 30 years. They also explained the parallelism between kicks and Hip Hop. They had a video showing how Run DMC popularized Adidas in the U.S. and a few displays showing how impactful the iconic "Air Jordan" has been over the last 30 years. Aside from the exhibits that I came to see, I was impressed with this museums use of space and variety of content. In just over an hour I saw the aforementioned exhibits and intriguing ones from Africa, Europe and America. There was even a section on feminist art. I think the Brooklyn Museum is unique in its ability to offer something for EVERYONE. They do an excellent job of making the art experience an inclusive one for anyone who may visit. I think some of the other museums in the city fail in this area. For my $16 I received one of the most educational, interesting experiences Ive ever had and for that the Brooklyn museum deserves 5 stars.

I write this from dim memory. Although I was born in the Borough of Churches, I have lived in San Francisco since 1984 and havent been back to New York since 1994, to my sorrow. Whenever I tell people about New York, I always recommend that they visit the Brooklyn Musuem. When my wife and I were last there, we wandered through the American painting collection and were approached by a guard, one Alfonso Cazolino by name. He spent the next half an hour regaling us with his loves of specific works, his vitamin regimen, and famly history. It seems, to the great shame of New York, that he was so lonely, there in a literally empty gallery in one of the worlds great museums. Were it not for the Met, the Brooklyn would be the pre eminent museum in the city. Its Egyptian collection, while smaller that the Mets, is far more visually accessible. Its Assyrian and Babylonian exhibit is breathtaking. Even the architecture of the building, by the legendary Mckim, Meade, and White, is worth the trip to behold. If the weather is pleasant, one has the option of visitng the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens directly behind the museum and beyond that, Prospect Park, in which Fred Olmstead corrected whatever mistakes he made with Central Park in the other borough. This is a world class destination and deserves a visit from anyone who either lives in New York or visits the city.

Entertainment and culture collide at the Brooklyn Museum. Already hosting a diverse collection of art and exhibits, it plays host to a wide assortment of entertainment and educational opportunities. During the summer months be sure to check out Target first Saturdays. The first Saturday of every month brings an assortment of live entertainment and films for the whole family. Ive seen a lot of my favorite musicians perform here and the environment is much more intimate than say Terminal 5. While you are there be sure to check out the botanical gardens that are just around the corner. I really enjoy sitting outside at the front of the museum where you will find a nice greasy area to pay and read, maybe soak up some sun, or in general just take a break during your museum excursion. The rotating cast of exhibits are really top notch. I had the opportunity to see the Ai Wei Wei exhibition which a phenomenal! Of you are feeling super fancy, you can eat at the Michelin star rated restaurant and bar, ice never been but I heard it rocks!

I used to be an art student studying near by, about fifteen blocks from the museum. Going to the museum was a must activity for me. I was so impressed by the famous oil paintings, and often sticked around trying to learn the techniques of the master, how to deal with colors of nature, especially finding out how the flesh tone was done on the human body in the old days. I was surprised to find much grays and blues were used in the flesh tone instead just pink, yellow, red and white. I would stick around for hours watching the details of certain paintings that I like and go back to my studio to paint. In recent years I had the chance of going back, when my two sister came to New York to visit me from Toronto. The front of the museum have been completely changed to a modern archetural look, and I had to search for some old pictures of the museum in order to remind myself what it used to look like forth years ago.

This is an absolute gem when it comes to museums in the city. I really adore this place. I was here for the first Target Saturdays with my friends. There is so much to see in this museum. One should definitely arrive early to enjoy the different art works on display across different floors. There might be some lines on some floors to get into a specific section of the museum. The DJ that night was so good. It was so much fun to see the crowd with different age groups enjoying the music. This reminded me of first Fridays at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago as they used to have a similar event like this. They also sell some snacks and drinks within the premises during the event. FYI- Arrive by 6 to get a smooth entry to the museum, when we went people were not let in after 7 due to over occupancy.

One of my favorite museums in the country. Just fyi I have a slight bias to this place as Ive been coming here since I was a kid and it was one of my hidden sanctuaries. Its seconds from the subway, houses one of the largest African art collections in North America and hosts a kick ass monthly party sponsored by Target. The curation of special exhibits has been phenomenal over the past 7 years encompassing various sub and counter cultural phenomena. Lets get back to this monthly party. When it first started it was crazy no holds bar dance party spilling into the street over the years it has evolved to a more see and be seen party where all the cool kids go. On the plus side it is an all ages event that also allows people into the museum and special exhibits for free.
