Wintonbury is consistently my go-to course in the Hartford area - always exceptionally well-maintained, notably the greens (hence my confusion at the other review remarking about them being worn out - Ive never seen that in the years Ive been playing there). Never overly crowded and consistently helpful staff. Yes, there are restrictions on the carts in terms of where you can drive them (they warn you on the cart when you approach those spots) and they do slow down on some of the hills, but honestly, its not that big of a deal. It doesnt detract from your round at all unless you are (for whatever reason) hyper-sensitive about it. These are fairly small matters in light of how good the course is.

Course is beautiful, but Ive never felt so "managed". Ever. GPS on carts used to manage golfers, ex.: you cannot drive cart out of designated fairway areas, or the carts shuts down. In "dangerous" areas, carts are speed restricted via GPS locator. We let a threesone and later, a twosome play through. Even though there was no one behind us, the course marshall came to our location and chided us about our slow pace of play. I could see it if we were impeding other golfers, but we were not. Why bother us just so the course can meet its speed metrics? What shouldve been a great round, spoiled. Wont be back...

Nice layout, great potential. However, unless you like "Communist golf" stay away from this course. Dont bother using a cart, you will end up walking more than if you walk the course with a pull-cart. Automated golf carts, absurd course rules, and heavily worn greens are a deal breaker. For this kind of money I can name 10 courses that are better options. I have yet to see any mention of their absurd course rules on their webpage....apparently they prefer to keep these rules a secret until you arrive. Hey Wintonbury, you got me once, but I, and my 3 friends that played on Aug 8th, 2017, will NEVER be back.

Nice lay-out and the course is always well taken care of. I wrote and earlier post about a few things that were bothering me, but after I wrote the first post, I immediately received an email from the pro addressing some of my issues. To do that goes a long way in my book and Ive changed my rating from 3 stars to 5 stars. Im sure the cost of running a private/public course is not cheap, but I would still like to see some good marketing from Wintonbury to attract players. Multiple play discounts, discounts for seniors on Fridays and some food and golf promotions, etc.

This is a fantastic track and the conditions meet "private club" standards. There is a great combination of long and short holes with significant elevations changes. The course is very playable which is not always the case with a Pete Dye design. This is a "lay of the land" track where the routing follows the natural landscape and you will used every club in your bag due to the elevation changes. I highly recommend this course

Thought this was going to be a great course to play. Turns out it is the exact opposite. The staff was extremely rude, and the course itself was in terrible shape. From swamp-like fairways to bumpy greens, this is not a place for a golfer to come and have an enjoyable time. Help spread the word on this course that doesnt deserve any of the attention it has gotten.

This is the best public golf course in New England. It offers a Pete Dye course designed for all levels of play set on a most attractive landscape that " Wows the eyes " . The restaurant has good food and drinks , it is located in a residential area and has a limited schedule when the golf course is less used ( winter ) .

They may have newly renovated the Restaurant....but as the Chinese say, "you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear". Course is in great condition thanks, to Mark Mansur, but the Food is absloutely terrible! 90% frozen and poor quality. Service is horrendous. Forget about a doggy bag! bring your air-sickness bag!

great course. but there is no reason that a round starting at 7 am should take you 5 hours when you are the first out. had to wait for 30 minutes on the turn because they are pushing people off both tees until 9:15 and completely ruin the flow of the golf course making it way too backed up. Play in the afternoon.

Very good layout but as others have mentioned, the insane GPS/Cart restrictions, the extreme preference (and rudeness via the starter) to leagues and locals and the worsening conditions on the greens make this course a no return for me. Id rather play Gillette Ridge for almost 1/2 the price down the road.

Decent course conditions for so early in the year. I wish they had mentioned they just aerated the greens though. It was wide open so we played multiple balls and never ran into another player all day. The usual tall grass had yet to come in so it made the usually challenging course fairly manageable.

This is an extraordinary public golf course, immaculately maintained and professionally run. Not a place for hackers; no dressing like a slob or drunken escapades with your golf cart. The setup is very fair from each tee box, and the conditions are excellent.

Longest round of golf that I have ever played, 5 hours and 45 minutes. There were no marshals on the course and no effort to speed up play. We called the pro shop from the course and nothing was done. We will never return.
