As a general matter, I love the New Parish and have had great experiences there, but last night my experience was so awful, it left a bad taste in my mouth that has made me rethink the whole place. I have a seizure and migraine disorder and smoke is a big trigger. As other posters have mentioned, doors were not open on time and the smoke was getting thick outside. I had some small seizures in line and needed to get out of the smoke, regroup, take some meds, and sit down. I was weak in the knees and had lost grip control in my dominant hand. The back door to the New Parish was open for VIP attendees. I explained my situation to the woman at the door who let me in. The bouncer however was like "You cant come in this door unless you are VIP." I said "I have a ticket, I just need to sit down because I have a seizure disorder." He was like "You are having a seizure right now?!" with a smirk on his face. I explained that I wasnt anymore but that I had had some small ones in the line. He still would not let me in. To make matters worse he was like "Should you be here?" WTF! I think managing my medical condition is my business - I told you what I needed and that was just to sit down. Its not like I had a grand mal seizure where I would need to leave for the night. I ended up walking around to the other door and they had finally opened it. I finally got to sit down which was all I asked for. I told the manager on duty, who was really nice about it and said the rules on the VIP door were strict - he offtered me a drink on the house - I declined, because seizures and liquor dont mix! He did give me a bottle of water. I am not someone who expects the rules to be bent all the time - but MEDICAL EMERGENCIES AND DISABILITY ACCESS are pretty good reasons to make an exception in my book. I have had seizure in many venues in the Bay Area and generally people are so supportive and helpful - the Bay Area in general is a leader in disability access so I would expect that. But I travel a lot and I have never had as bad a response as this. THIS WAS THE WORSE RESPONSE I HAVE EVER RECEIVED ANYWHERE TO ME HAVING A SEIZURE.

Ive mostly come here for The People which is a monthly dance party and oh so fun! They have local artists selling their work and painters creating in various places upstairs as well. You can also people watch or locate friends youve lost in the crowd from upstairs. Its $5 before 10pm and $10 after which is a deal for a dance party. Ive also come for several concerts. The space was a little crowded for those and theres pillars on the floor so it can be hard to get a space where you can see without the pillar blocking. The comedy show I went to was good, though. They had chairs set up and we got to sit front row upstairs.

I love the poets and comics I have seen here and I love the artists and performers this venue books in general. That is why its so horrible that I cant attend events here because of something as stupid as cigarette smoke. I get really intense nausea and headaches from cigarette smoke. There is an open courtyard that people smoke cigarettes in -and it goes straight into the main venue... it is not like a little bit of smoke, its all of it. If people are outside smoking its strong like they are sitting inside with you. There is no airflow except the airflow IN...

New Parish is located in the heart of uptown Oakland. There is ample street parking. In terms of the venue, its a huge space with two levels and multiple rooms to get lost and get your dance on. Theres a open "court yard" for everyone to congregate to catch a break and get some air Music varies every night but there are always multiple djs on deck to keep the party going. Its also a great venue to catch a live show when your favorite artists is in town. Nice, intimate vibe and great sound system.

Saw Monsieur Perine here - I love this venue so much!! Theres a mixture of standing room, seating, and balcony seating to suit the variety of crowds. The courtyard is really cute too! Parking around the area can be kind of sketchy, but there is a lot nearby and plenty of free street spots. The room is very intimate, yet quirky. The bar service is decent and I loved how they had chicken, waffles and ice cream. Cash only, but will take card if thats the only option.

Came here to support a friend playing for a courtyard venue. The bar here is equipped as a dive bar and is ideal for simple drinks. Get your shots and straight whiskies, nothing more nothing less. Courtyard venue is fairly small, maybe 60 - 80 top. Sound was good and the venue was great on a chill windy day. The venue owner seems to be a very open-minded and accepting person.

Great venue! Security was nice and staff was chill. Only complaint is the bar tender. I asked for a PBR and he looked at me as if I ordered a Unicorn Frap. He said "My bar doesnt carry that!" in a rude manner. He rushed my partner and I to buy drinks even though there was no one at the bar. My advice get drunk before hand and avoid the overpriced rude bar service.

Interesting venue. Not your typical music hall, this has an open air space in the center. The night that I went had vendors in that space and DJs playing in both a tiny space by the bar and in the main space which has a second floor that overlooks the dance floor. The smoke got to be too much. I left the concert early because I felt lightheaded and sick from it.

Always a good time when i come here. Very hot. The bar situation and crowd control is ridiculous. Please pre game or you will waste $$ on drinks that get spilled. Or just drink at the bar. Well youll still spill your drink. Trust me i know from experience and seen it happen to many times. Anywho all events i have been too here were great.

Usually a good crowd this last time the line was ridiculous and there were a lot of young people. Not the usual crowd the other times Ive been there. Music was good to many people to dance comfortably though. Drinks to forever to get. Hopefully next time we go theres less of a crowd so we can actually enjoy a date night.

I love almost any club, bar, lounge that has an outside patio so this place is awesome just for that alone. I hate having to go out for a smoke or with my friend who wants to smoke and have to fight my way back into the club. The outside patio also you to get fresh air fromt the dancing and atmosphere of the place.

Really good place to see a show, and they get lots of great acts. One nice thing about this venue is the outdoor courtyard where you can hang out when you need a breather. If you can , get tickets in person before the day of the shoe at the bar next door and save the silly online convenience fees.
