I recently discovered that Im genderfluid and came in seeking help and counseling. I was identifying as a girl at the time. One of the employees referred to me as a guy which is not on at all saying "Ill show him where it is" which I thought was disgusting ignorant and very upsetting! considering who he works for and where we were! Cmon ! Then I found the reception for counseling. I asked her how long it would be for me to see someone after I filled out the form. I wasnt rude. I was concerned and polite. She didnt give me an answer. She gave me attitude. She said "itll be a minute, okay?" In that condescending tone that no one likes to hear! Are you here to help me or put me down? Im having such a hard time with what Im going through and to go to the right place For support and have them make you feel so much lower than before you walked in makes me feel so distraught. I didnt expect to have an negative experience considering the fact that this center caters to the LGBT and i was really desperate for help.

LGBTQ Friendly and Positive Space Attended an author reading here who experienced in his youth, racism and homophobia from schoolmates and neighbours, but in maturity his attitude and tone was positive supported by a packed room of fans. The space had a stage with seats and bright lights allowing everyone a good clear view of author and interviewer. Downstairs an information lobby and cafe were open to the public. Note: two mixed gender washrooms were an intriguing experience and maybe mixed bath houses will follow this equality trend?

It offers a variety of services and outlets. It could do better as far as outreach. It has a separate wing which is misleading for someone new. I attended a dating seminar which was a ploy to buy a book and stage a boring talk show. Instead of being fun and connecting people it created obstacles. At times they are strict about alcohol but if youre sponsoring a big enough venue then its ok. Its a rock for the community at the same time crippling its efforts to fall face first into a pile of broken meth. All jokes aside it has potential.

I was visiting for the first time and the front desk had no care about that. The community there seemed as if my first visit didnt matter. Nor the person before me. Its a nice space, but I dont think they care about their community much. Really was disappointment and my excitement passed quickly. :(

Whenever I visit NYC, I always stop off at The Center to see whats going on. Sometimes I check ahead to see what groups are meeting that Id like to join. Then I plan my trip around that groups meeting. Ive met lots of friendly NYC guys and women at The Center.

A safe space of ALL lgbtq folks young and old. Whether you need self help groups, 12 step meeting, lgbt friendly organizations, counseling hiv assistance, dances events SAGE lgbt youth library space. No room for all the services. A wonderful place to be.

What a great place. Came for a meeting and just loved the idea that this city had such a refuge. The Keith Haring mural is amazing.
