I grew up going to the Amanas. I have been there a handful of times and look back on those memories fondly. Great shops and food. This was not the case this time. We got there on a Thurs afternoon in February and half of the shops were closed. Looking at the websites for the Amanas it states the hours of the store and they say they are open Monday thru Sunday. Nowhere does it say that they are closed during certain seasons. This was extremely disappointing. We went for lunch and I decided to keep it light because I wanted to save a signature Amana family style meal for dinner. Little did I know that the whole area shuts down with any snow. We tried to go dinner at 6:00 the three restaurants were all closed because of the weather. We had to eat at Caseys instead. I did not come to the Amanas for Caseys (no offense Caseys) I came for German food. We checked in to the Village Guest Suite. It was a nice room with a good price. When I called to make reservations I was told that there would not be breakfast because she could get her pastries from her baker. I told her that was fine because I wanted to get breakfast elsewhere. What she didnt tell me is that this five inches of snow would shut down everything on Friday. So when breakfast came around (which I was looking forward to most) I once again had to eat at Caseys . If she knew I wasnt going to be able to eat breakfast elsewhere and you run an Inn it might be good service to offer some sort of breakfast. I expected better service from a locally owned Inn. If the town can shut down for some snow because of their small town feel then maybe they can make up for that by providing small town service. This is not the first time it has snowed in the Amanas people dont need to overreact so much to that. I was looking forward to reliving some childhood memories, but instead I got very little from the Amanas and dont know when I will be back.

I am from Colorado and have been stopping at Amanas 7 villages for 20 years while visiting family in Iowa. We always bought whole pies to take to family and to take home to Colorado. It was our routine for years! Stopped in yesterday to get a pie for my grandpa, they said come back tomorrow. We drove 30 miles today to get him a pie only to be told I cant buy a whole pie, and wouldnt sell me enough pieces to make a pie at $5.25 each! I will NEVER return to the Amanas now, and I am thoroughly disappointed that it has become such a money game it has lost the beauty of the old Amanas...so sad my kids will never enjoy it how I did. My family and I will never stop there again.

Please put the accurate hours on this google and your website we came on a sunday got there at 5ish and was told everything was closed lady there said all stores in the colonies close by 5 everyday and this site and google says your open to 8pm every day so therefor i didnt get to experience the colonies due to the wrong info and i had driven 5hrs to get there and had to go home disappointed.however the lady did let us in to buy a couple things but we couldnt experience anything else

Little town with very quaint qualities. We love coming here for a stress-free getaway. Good Quilts is our favorite shop, but there is so much to experience here in all of the "colonies" that you could spend a week here and not be bored. Everyone is very friendly. The brewery has very good locally crafted beer, root beer, and cream soda. The meat shop in the East Colonies has great prices and quality goods. Overall for a weekend getaway, this place cant be beat. Highly recommended.

WE STAYED AT YOUR CAMPGROUND TWO YEARS AGO ON OUR WAY TO OUR SON AND DAUGHTER IN LAWS IN DENVER FOR THE BIRTH OF OUR GRANDDAUGHTER. IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME THERE. WE LOVED HOW PEACEFUL THE CAMP WAS, HOW FRIENDLY EVERYONE WAS AND WE WISHED WE WERENT ON SUCH A TIME RESTRAINT BECAUSE WE COULDNT TAKE ALL THE SHOPS IN. (WE ACTUALLY HAD TWO GRANDDAUGHTERS COMING THE SAME DAY IN TWO STATES) BUT TRUST ME THIS MOM MOM GOT HER SHOPPING IN

Great place to bring your friends and family!! A little bit of everything for everyone whether that be shopping our fun stores, eating our delicious food or drinking our amazing beers and wines!! Definitely worth spending a day or 3 at learning about our history and experiencing our small town charm!! Note that during the winter some stores may not open during the week or close early with pending weather.

Its the Amana Colonies! On the Iowa buck list for myself and my girlfriend, we recently made our first trip here. One could definitely spend multiple days across several of the colonies and never see it all. Redundancy will definitely be seen here so keep that in mind as you begin your adventure. Checklist: Millstream Brau House, anything pickled, walking the streets and taking in the beauty.

A really cute little town with a handful of stuff to do and buy, only issue seems to be everywhere is going out of business. I hope to come back and see new stores that might help keep the place going. They have like to breweries, and four different wineries which offer samples and discounts on multiple bottles. I will be back for the wineries and to try out the breweries.

This was an awesome trip to take the family on. I had to take a star as we did a bit of shopping thinking everything was made at the Amana Colonies but I had to take a star due to I bought a leather wallet from the leather store and found that it was actually made in India. They dont seem to hold on to the locally made status they claim.

Great place to visit. Was there 40 years ago. Much more now. General store has a huge Christmas section. Found unique activities. Great ham salad sandwiches and strudel at bakery. Got rhubarb wine. It is sweeter than what we got 40 years ago. More drinkable now. Family friendly village.

Interesting combination of historical buildings well maintained alongside present day commerce. A bit too much appeared to be imported goods brought in to "fill out" the inventory. I also wish there was more historical interpretation available. Nonetheless, an intriguing place to visit.

Always like perusing the stores and walking around several of the communities - each with something unique. A lot of places to eat a meal, or snack. Their live theatre has enjoyable shows. Let the kids explore at Edelsteins for rocks and fossils.

Cute tourist trap - pricing is high but based on the tourism i think thats why they get away with it. Its a very unique area to see though. As a local i do still go to some festivals but still feel its a little over priced for our area.

This is a must visit if youre in the area. We live about an hour and 15 minutes away and visit about once or twice per year. Lots of shops, nature things, etc. Ive yet to visit during a festival. Looking forward to that someday.

It is a beautiful little town, lots of interesting things. I was a little disappointed. I think only two of the many shops actually had handcrafted, handmade items. I still had a blast shopping with my family.
