The Marine War hero who was decorated by President Roosevelt and Congress appointed him as the first four star general in the Marine Corps, General Alexander Archer Vandegrift. The Marines, outnumbered, starved, sick and short supplied, managed to prevail over a numerically superior enemy. Their division commander was General Alexander Vandergrift; Medal of Honor recipient, 18th Commandant and the Marine Corps and the first Marine four star general. As Commandant, the Army, President Truman and General Eisenhower besieged General Vandegrift in a post war attempt to absorb the Marine’s mission into the other services. The Commandant aligned himself with Congress and secured its support and the Marine Corps future with his famous “bended knee speech”. In that speech he stated: “…Sentiment is not a valid consideration in determining questions of national security. We have pride in ourselves and in our past, but we do not rest our case on any presumed ground of gratitude owing us from the Nation. The bended knee is not a tradition of our Corps. If the Marine as a fighting man has not made a case for himself after 170 years of service, he must go. But I think you will agree with me that he has earned the right to depart with dignity and honor, not by subjugation to the status of uselessness and servility planned for him by the War Department.”

Apsolutely a must see! This has to be one of the best museums I have ever been in and I have been to this place more than once. I have spent from the time it opened at 09:00 till its closing at 17:00 (9AM-5PM). Just reading the Marine history timeline and the United States history timeline which are together can take a few hours on its own. You will move through the inception of the Marine Corps to present day. These rooms are broken down with various items, artifacts, uniforms that would represent that part of history. Some of these are paintings, sketches, or pictures that depicted the event that you are looking at. Some of the dioramas are small miniature buildings, battlefields or military airbases and are very well detailed. There are also the life size dioramas that are so realistic they want you to feel like you are with them on the battle field. This could be it in a refrigerated room during the Korean War or coming out of the back of a CH46 Helicopter at Khe Sanh airstrip in Vietnam. There are plenty of staff and volunteers that are former Marine Corps Veterans that may have fought at the place you are studying and they are a wealth of information. So since they are open everyday but Christmas from 9AM-5PM this is a place you want to visit. Also it is Free!

I visit this museum often. Almost every week there is at least one special event taking place. Concerts, celebrations, and ceremonies are a regular occurrence. My last visit was during the ceremony to commemorate the 150th year of the U.S. State Dept. Diplomatic Security Service and the 75th Anniversary of Marine Security Guard program. It was an enjoyably educational day, as are all of my visits to the NMMC. Had a delicious Philly cheese steak sandwich with fries and an ale at Tun Tavern. Its designed to resemble the 18th century tavern in Philadelphia where the Marine Corps was born on Nov. 10, 1775. And is located on the second deck next to the Devil Dog Diner. Spent some time walking off my lunch with a leisurely stroll through the Memorial Garden to see whats new out there. Pokémon Go @ the National Museum of the Marine Corps. There are many stops and lots to catch. But only while the museum grounds are open. This is a Federal Instalation and you will be arrested for trespassing if you enter the grounds after hours or when the gates are closed.

I am a Marine Vietnam Veteran and this museum made me feel like the day I graduated from boot camp and someone called me "Marine" for the first time. When I walked through the chopper and heard the sounds and felt the vibrations, then stepped into the firebase exhibit my heart actually started pounding just it used to 47 years ago. Another Marine at the exhibit turned to me and said "they really got it right". He as 3/3 and I was 1/4 of the Third Marine Division and we shared a memory or two. I met a Marine Raider and had a conversation with him that I will never forget, nor will I forget talking to the Iwo Jima Marine Frank Matthews that I also met. Getting to interact with my ancestors, the Marines who motivated me to become a Marine was the highlight of my day. This is a must-see for any Marine and anyone who is not will look at Marines in a whole new light. Thank you for having this wonderful place. Semper Fi!

Ive always been torn between here and the Iwo Jima memorial as my favorite places to go spend time. While I was still active, whenever I was home and felt down about being in, discouraged about my service or whatever. I would come here. And it never failed to remind me why I joined the Corps in the first place. I could spend all day in here and not even make it halfway through. Everything inside is in such great detail its hard to take it all in at first. I am so glad this place exists and I can not wait to see what is going to be added after they finish the current renovations. Ladies and gentlemen. I highly recommend this place as a visit. And if you have ever thought about joining, go walk around. Talk to the Marines that are there. Read the displays. Its well worth the time

This was such an incredible place. So much history and so much to learn. Reading about the accomplishments of Marines and even talking to some of the men who fought during during these historical wars, was a true honor. Im so impressed with the exhibits and how well thought out they are. Each period of history is broken down and you just swell with pride. Seeing the 2nd flag encased, from Iwo Jima was really neat. I got to share this with my son and he loved it! Pictured is Mr. Frank Matthews, an Iwo Jima veteran. He was just 17 when he landed at the base of Mount Suribachi. Imagine that! Hearing his experience and being able to shake his hand was incredible. If I could give this more stars, I would.

Wow - this is a must see if you have any interests in military history. We took our family through the Museum and we were thoroughly impressed. The curators did an amazing job telling the history of the Marine Corps and kept it very interactive throughout. The Marine models depicted in scenes look very realistic and they even let you get to experience what it would be like to arrive at boot camp. We at lunch at Tun Tavern and it was delicious... be careful in the gift shop because you can really drop some coin. You cant go wrong here either because admission is FREE! We will be going back to see some of the things we missed and to walk the grounds/overlook when the weather cools off!
