Just returned home today from a three-night stay at the Quirk Hotel — my first. My flight didnt arrive into RIC until 1:30 AM on Saturday, so I had called ahead to ensure they didnt give my room away. Once I arrived super late, the overnight associate checked me in and was friendly. He informed me they had no more king rooms left and Id be getting a double (no big deal). They respected my wishes to be on a higher floor and I was in 414. Being a man, I loved it wasnt a super pink room, but instead one with charcoal / navy / white palette. Loved the details of the room, the history of the building, and the windows. Good storage when you enter the room, good sized bathroom for an old building, and beds were comfortable. Loved the overall decoration of the hotel (both room and lobby), and the employees were all super friendly no matter where in the hotel. Here are some of the challenges that kept me from giving Quirk a perfect rating: - Some of the details are, indeed, quirky, but really impractical. The tiny little fridge on the long desk doesnt even cool the drinks in it. Looks like the fridge version of a kids Easy Bake Oven. It also looks clunky on the desk and takes away precious space if you need to work like I did. Its loud, too. - Industrial furnishings and trim in the bathroom were awesome, but for being a little over a year old, shower was a little gross. Lots of soap scum and mold - needs new grout. - Shower gel is on the sink, not in the shower - which means I didnt think they had any for the first 2 days. - Shower pressure could stand to be better. - Bed was comfortable, but being on a platform, you barely touch the mattress and it slides away. - Didnt want full duvet first night (see next point), and under the sheet the duvet had several blood or liquid stains. - Pillow cases were threadbare on some, as well as a few of the towels. - Service (like previous reviews stated) is super inconsistent. I dont drink coffee, but the tiny little water cartons in the room were never re-stocked. I saw that part of the daily hotel fee goes to something called a water bar, but never figured what that is. If its two tiny cartons of water that are never re-filled, then thats super silly and a rip off. Also never saw some of the other amenities like daily newspaper. - In-room heater/AC is one of the loudest Ive ever seen. Room was entirely too hot, even when turned down - so I turned it off for most of stay. when it was on, sounded like an airplane and couldnt even hear TV - Cable TV channels went in and out. Sometimes they worked, sometimes it was "no signal." - No "do not disturb" sign provided in room, but saw it on other rooms doors. - Loved the cozy grey armchair, but its in a corner that faces the room, so you cant use it to watch TV unless you pull it out. I did appreciate that certain things in-room like soda were reasonably priced (which you never see at a hotel). Too bad they werent cold. Pillows were firm and comfortable, which NEVER happens at hotels (theyre usually mushy and too soft). Mattress was good, too. Firm, but not too firm. Had room service breakfast first morning and it was decent. Wifi was fast and consistent! Finally, I checked out this morning, and a major pet peeve of mine, especially at a hotel of this level, is when the associate doesnt ask how my stay was. Its just nice to hear this. She was nice enough, but just took my key, offered me a receipt, I paid for a soda I had in the room, and that was it. No "thanks for staying here" and no "how was your stay?" Its the little things. GREAT hotel, and I love that RVA has a stylish option to the boring chains. A little more consistency and increase in service that reflect the high-end essence of the Quirk will go a long way in my mind.

The hotel is beautiful. The architecture, the décor, the great modern feel. But the customer service was absolutely awful. In room service is limited to the maple and pine main menu or bar snack menu. If you are looking for normal room service fare then look elsewhere. I ordered breakfast to be delivered at 8:30am. It showed up incomplete. I called down and 30 minutes later another third of my order showed up. Another 20 minutes and another call later I finally received my toast and coffee to complete the breakfast. We went out and around town for the day, rva is a fantastic city. Coming back I was scolded for not keeping my old valet ticket. Who reuses valet tickets? They didnt tell me to keep it when my car was brought around the first time. We came back to rest and change for dinner to find our room had not been serviced. No new towels, bed unmade, just as we left it at 11:00am. We very deliberately took our do not disturb sign down so we would get fresh linens. I could also hear conversation clearly from the room above ours when standing near the window. Like they were sitting next to me. The hotel seems really nice, but they just dont get the little things right, and didnt seem that apologetic with all the problems. There were other issues, too. In room service was supposed to have a menu on a certain TV channel, which did not appear. I downloaded the hotel app, which was not really functional for the quirk and seemed to be for other hotels in the ownership group. On our final night, we were able to go to the first public opening of the rooftop bar. After all the other problems we really wanted to have a good experience, but alas it was not to be. After studying the brand new first night drink menu, I ordered a draft beer, an IPA, only to be immediately told they didnt have it. When I pointed it out on the menu, on the first night the menu was ever used, the bartender shrugged and said there must be a mistake. The view up there was great, but the beer I wanted was an IPA, and with no comparable beer to replace the one I wanted, we left without having anything to get to our dinner reservations and have drinks there. Perhaps they need more time to work out the problems but I wouldnt recommend staying here to anyone based on our 2 night stay. The small problems would be easily ignored if there werent so many of them at every turn. Book at your own risk at this point.

Company trip and was booked here since most hotels were sold out. It was the most unique hotel Ive ever stayed at. The name says it all. The history in the building, the little heart outside the door to press your room card by to get into your room was outside the box. It was eclectic in every good imaginable way. I received a free appetizer card upon check in. I came downstairs for dinner and sat at the bar, literally spent $100 on myself that night but it was worth every penny. Whomever that chef is was amazing. The steak meal I had with the potatoes and onions was phenomenal. The steak fries with the herbd infused dip was great, the wonton dumpling appetizer was great and the carrot, cinnamon fusion dessert was awesome! I tried the "Victoria" drink (had another 3 of those). I was pleasantly surprised how much I ended up liking everything. To top it off the next morning I came back down to have breakfast and hands down best french toast Ive ever had with the berry compote! Im one to douse my pancakes/French toast in syrup - this didnt even require it because it was so moist! Next time I have to stay up there - I will have my company book here and next time ill check out the rooftop bar.
