My wife and I made the 30 minute drive from Charlottesville to Castle Hill Cider on a Saturday. Overall it was a really good experience and well definitely be coming back. The drive is beautiful once you leave Charlottesville and get on to 231. The street is lined with large estates. It makes the drive genuinely enjoyable. Its worth noting that youll lose service at some point so dont quit out of Maps if youre relying on your cell phone for directions, you wont be able to open Maps back up and get directions again. The grounds are incredible. You drive in on their one lane gravel road, lined with shrubs, trees, vineyards and orchards. Their buildings are also fantastic. My wife and I both commented on how amazing this would be for a wedding venue. They have lots of parking, although on Saturday at 3:00 this was far from an issue. They have both indoor and outdoor bars and lots of outdoor seating. They also have bocci and corn hole outside and checkers inside. Dogs are welcome both indoors and out (at least when people brought their greyhound and another group brought their golden doodle indoors the employees didnt stop them). We opted for a premium tasting ($12, for 10 1-oz pours of cider). Initially we went for the standard tasting ($10, for 8 1-oz pours of cider) but with one tasting left we were given the option to switch and we decided wed like to try the two that were excluded from the standard set. Their samples go from dry to sweet and the two exclusions fit in at the end of that spectrum. They were worth an extra $4. This was my only complaint about this cidery, they have tastings instead of flights. Id much rather sit down with all of my options at once with written information and read through the differences while I make my way through the various ciders, rather than having someone give them to me in a set order, while I stand, and set the pace for me. They also have a "club" which you can join for free. This gives you two free tastings or two free glasses of cider per visit ($16 value, once a month) and a 20% discount on all of their ciders, with the commitment of buying three bottles of cider every three months (at that 20% discount). We like the grounds enough and the cider enough that well probably end up doing this once weve explored the area a bit more. We bought a $17 bottle of their Big Pippin (their cocktail cider), and if we drank one of these once a month we wouldnt be complaining. When our families come to visit well definitely bringing them by Castle Hill.

My wife and I drove about a hour and a half to spend the day out here in the area. Since I am huge cider fan we decided to stop here on the way home. We were at the cider tasting room at 4:45 about 15 minutes before closing. We did notice there was a wedding about ready to start but from previous experiences at these types of places they usually leave the tasting room open till normal closing time...NOT here! We were very rudely ask to leave because the wedding was starting at five, and they had no time for a tasting. I am just saying if you are not going to operate to normal hours that are listed you should make that clear on a sign or website. Maybe I wasnt dressed fancy enough either. All I know is we wont be going back, I hope they make other people in the future more aware of these things.

We had a fantastic time at Castle Hills tasting room. George and Laura were beyond patient and displayed a thorough understanding of the cidering process and were able to explain the nuances of each cider in great detail. They offered reasonable prices for flights (insofar as I am accustomed when visiting wineries), and was blown away by the unique flavors, especially the Serendipty, Big Pippin, and the limited 1764 (similar to an ice wine). While Im much better versed in "beer culture", this being my first experience at a cidery, I think Ill be getting more into ciders. The property itself was gorgeous.

Great ciders. I especially liked the 1764 which is really more of a liqueur and us available only in the premium tasting. The cheese selection was great and we loved the Red Row. The tasting server could have been a bit more informative but when she realized we were also there to buy, she became more friendly. They had a beautiful outdoor area with tables where we had a small picnic. They also had corn hole and bocci set up. They host weddings and were awarded best large menu. Very enjoyable

We had a horrible experience. We had a group of 12. We were late for our reservation but called ahead to make sure they could still take us. They said they could. The server inside was terribly rude and treated us like an inconvenience. So we went outside and said we hoped they were more cheerful than the girl inside. The manager started yelling at us. We left. Ill never go back and Ill never drink their cider!

Came here for my bachelorette party and though I enjoyed the cider and the view, the staff were less than friendly. They seemed to have no time for us even though we made reservations and just in general did not seem happy that we were there. And this wasnt your typical rowdy bachelorette crowd either especially since this one of the first places we visited that day.

We also showed up towards the end of the day after a long drive to find them closing early for an event. Couldnt the events start at 5:15-5:30? Guess you have to call first to make sure theyre not going to boot you early. We were definitely rushed out of there. Pretty disappointing.

Arrived in the middle of a fundraising event... An adult Easter egg hunt. We decided not to participate, but there was a nice crowd. We did a cider tasting and spent a quiet hour outside, a nice addition to our afternoon.

The cider was excellent, the cheese plate was delicious, and the staff was insanely friendly even though our ride arrived embarrassingly late after they closed. Well worth the trip for a tasting!
