The owners philosophy very much confuses me. Ive been to Building Character several times, and there are always beautiful pieces there... But they are priced EXTREMELY expensively. Im talking $50 for an old shutter... hundreds for a beat-up table. From what Ive read, the owners goal is to take old, would-have-been-thrown-away materials and give them an opportunity to get a new home... therefore also giving the buyer a chance to decorate/furnish their home using unique and cool items. But whenever I talk to people who have been to the store, we reach the same conclusion: The store is missing out on a HUGE group of potential customers by only making their things available to those who are very financially well off. I would love to shop here, and think it is a great concept... but as a middle-class customer, I simply cant afford it.

Building Character is actually one of the best places to find almost anything for anyone in Lancaster. It has more than 40 vendors under one roof - this includes craftspeople and artists. The salvage is just a segment of what it has to offer Lancaster. Live music, events and workshops enrich the business and offer even non-shoppers something to enjoy while there. Ever been there on a First Friday... its the place to check out! It speaks to the person who wants to work on his or her house and not shop at a big-box store or for the person who wants to buy handmade, creative items from local artisans.

We had so much fun looking around this place. Each mini-shop has its own vibe. Some shops were way too pricey for us, but we were able to find plenty of cool items in our budget. I loved that we could pull stuff from the various stalls and pay for it all together on one card.

Well, I must say if you want to see everything from nice crafted artwork to a collection of random rubber ducks this is you place. All kinds of ecclectic things to peruse. A heaven for the terminal shopaholic

Really cool shopping area in Lancaster city. Lots of small shops in one building. Pretty neat!

Lots of great local artists all in one place. Similar to Madcap, but slightly less quality.
