This review is for the patio they call the Piazza. OK, the good: The buildings, the grounds, the gardens, and the atmosphere are amazing. The owners spent a fortune on this place, turning it into a very classy place (that was once an abandoned old tree farm). Kudos for investing in a Plain Township based business, where I live. This is where I run out of nice things to say..... The bad: 1.) The place and its clientele are very pretentious. If you didnt arrive in a Mercedes or BMW, and wear $600 outfits, you were instantly out classed. The place wreaks of money. Not a common mans place to eat at all. 2.) We had to wait 45 minutes for a party of 5, and when we were seated, they sat us at a square wrought iron table built for 4. Very cramped and awkward. 3.) The prices are ridiculous! $10 glasses of wine that were small in size and filled with mediocre tasting spirits. Expect to pay $10 - $24 for a sandwich, chips and a pickle spear. These meals anywhere else would be under $9 and would exceed Gervasis portions and taste. I ordered a bottle of wine. That was a mistake. They gave me something called a half sleeve. Guess what it was? A half bottle of wine! Yeah, 375ML of wine for the price of a full 750ML bottle! Rip off. 4.) When we were finally seated by the hostess, we quickly learned that there are no waiters or waitresses! You literally have to walk up to an ordering station, place your order and pay for it. I felt like I was eating at the county fair. Thankfully the kitchen was kind enough to bring the food to our table. Unbelievable - no wait staff? Really?!? If this is an upscale place to eat, they lost my vote. For these kinds of prices, I expect to be waited on. 5.) You had to tip at the time you paid for your meal. Really?!? Tip for something that I havent received yet? And tip for what? Wheres the wait staff? It just felt like greed. 6.) No full service bar. Wine and soda only. (A member of our party didnt like wine, and wanted a mixed drink) 7.) Im not sure how to control it, but the walking grounds are filled with Canadian Goose crap. Its everywhere. If you walk the grounds, expect to get bird crap all over your shoes. All in all, I spent $125 for a party of 5. We all walked away very disappointed, and vowed to never return. I actually felt ripped off. We could have spent half the money elsewhere and received twice the value. I never mind spending a little extra money for an upscale place to dine. However, I do expect to see value for my hard earned money. The Gervasi Piazza failed in every way.

Great Place - visited here on Saturday evening March 26, 2011 as part of our first anniversary celebration activities. We were very pleased. The location is fab, as was the service and the food. We were glad Gervasis website suggested reservations, had we shown up without reservations our first choice of time would had left us stranded as the place was hopping by 4pm. We were also glad Gervasi publishes their menu, we were able to choose ahead of our visit what we thought we would like to eat and to plan for the cost of our visit. Our server had a great sense of what wines were best served with what entrees as well as an overall general knowledge of wines. We had our concerns about wine in another Ohio winery but were pleasantly surprised. This winery makes all its own wines from grapes grown on the property as well as purchased elsewhere. It uses whole grapes rather than grape juices and the end results speak well of this process. Our food - we ordered the Cioppino - a dish of Crab, Clams, Shrimp, and Cod served over Three Cheese Risotto, Roasted Fennel, Green Peppers, Onions, and Celery served with a creamy herb Tomato Broth --- this dish was out of this world good. We asked about the seafood freshness and were told the seafood is flown in daily! Freshness abounds. It was a bit like being at an ocean resort in Ohio no less! Even though the weather was too cold to enjoy a stroll around the grounds, we definitely plan to return to take in another meal and a leisurely exploration of the beautiful grounds. We suggest you give the Gervasi website a visit and make plans to visit and see for yourself the unique solitude of this in town location.

I gave it two stars not because of the appetizers or ambience (those where fine), but rather my meal. I had the bolognese which came with a meat sauce. The gemelli (the type of pasta) was barely cooked and had I literally made some pasta using gemelli for myself a few days before and it tasted far BETTER than this professional restaurants version. And dont get me started on the meat sauce. It looked like brown mush mash. No joke. You didnt want look at it, much less eat it. And sadly our waiter didnt even notice that I ate nothing. A good server would have checked in, and/or offered an alternative. And thus we were left having to pay 20% tip because we had a party of 10. Unfortunately my sister next to me couldnt offer me her meal either. It had way to much sauce and the gnocchi was dense, not soft pillows that gnocchi should be. At least my parents meals where decent. For what we payed, it was NOT Italian fine dinning. Their wines where not good at all, with my uncle and father sadly disappointed and my mother was not pleased as all. Luckily the vineyard was beautiful and the patio had amazing views. The dessert was also very good. AND THAT is the only reason for the two stars. I just cannot get past our meal and drinks. It soured the entire evening for my appetite. I left feeling hungry.

For the Piazza: By far the food was horrible. My fiance and I wanted to have a nice dinner out and I always wanted to try this place. Boy was I wrong. Yeah, the atmosphere is okay but I didnt go there to stare at a lake and step in a ton of geese poop when we walked on the property--I went for the food! Tasteless, boring, burnt and dry. We ordered the BBQ chicken which was dry and burnt on one side. There other side is soaked in BBQ sauce to cover the not so good taste. Our veggies and potatoes were also dry. The potatoes were so dry that I literally thought I had broken my tooth on it. Turns out what I spit out thank God was only more dry, nasty potato. If you are going to have someone cook on the grill, make sure they know how to cook on the grill! Awful! Plus the whole "well seat you but you have to go order your own food" situation is beyond classless. We went out to have dinner, not to have to do all the work. It was a incredibly slow night. All you could hear were the servers complaining about how slow it was for an hour straight and yet they couldnt just simply take our order for us. Crazy. Rethink this restaurant before going, food is not worth the wait on busy nights or when its very, very slow. Guess people are starting to hint on to how not so nice this place is.
