It was in the 90s and very humid during my stay when I arrived and the air was not working. They had a portable floor unit. The girl who brought me to the room told me they have had problems on the third floor. I was room #10 third floor. The maintence guy could not fix internal unit. The portable floor unit read E4. He couldnt get it to work finally emptied the water out of it. It started to work, but the the temp reset to 75 and the top floor was very hot. They attempted to fix 3 more times. But it would do the same. I awoke twice that night to fix it. Even downloaded the manual because the buttons were so worn you didnt know what you were pushing. Finally at 3 Am it started to work. Woke at 6 am sweating. Cold shower. Told them. Breakfast. Walk. Came back. Not fixed. Told them my best friend was arriving. Needed the room serviced. I notified them at 9:00 am. At 11:30 room not serviced. We gave them several more attempts. Even saw them putting a new portable unit it another room on the 3rd floor. They said they had to go out and buy it. So why not go back? Get one for my room????The hallway was cold and room hot. We went to dinner at Willow Creek Winery. Food great and wine. However the hotel told us it was a short walk about a mile and a half from the hotel. We walked it. It was more than a mile and a half. A 20 minute walk turned into an 1hour and 20 minutes in our dresses and flip flops. On main roads and back farm roads. We return after dinner, taking a cab back and the room was hot and they put a fan in the room. We packed up and asked for a refund. We paid cash. They said all they could do was refund a credit to a credit card instead of refunding the cash or we would have to wait until morning when the manager arrived. I said no. We are not staying in a sweltering hot room with no air and a fan. After a couple hours of insisting the manager finally drove from Cape May Court House ,she handed us back our money back. We left at 11:00 pm. More complaints: asked if there was coffee close by. The manager behind the desk and the girl tell us of Wawa and a coffee shop by the beach. We asked for something closer. They said sorry. We turn around and there is free coffee in the reception area of the front desk. Then the front desk manager says, oh look at that. Theres coffee right there. Ive been going there for years. The place is looking run down. Not kept up, obviously. The staff seemed miserable from the waitress at breakfast to the entire staff except housekeeping, who actually smiled. The mold growing on the front porch -ceiling, dirty bathroom on first floor. There was a wedding. There were drinks, wedding material and pre wedding stuff all over the sitting area and tables. No one was cleaning up after the guests. The coffee that was spilled on the linen table cloth at breakfast, was still there for the guests at the wedding and when we left at 11:00 pm. Look for posted pictures. Very upset. The room looked great until you looked around. No air conditioning. They put a fan in the room? 3rd floor. I sweated more in the room than I did out just sitting out side .

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Southern Mansion last year, and we had a wonderful time. The rooms are beautiful and the breakfast is delicious, so we booked reservations here for a second time. When we saw the weather report for our upcoming stay, I called the Mansion to ask if they could bump our reservation up to give us nicer weather for our stay. The woman I spoke to on the phone to book the room was kind; the woman I spoke to when I asked to change the date was incredibly rude. She argued with me about the weather (which is ridiculous) and she acted as though changing the dates was a huge leap. She then hung up on me, and DID NOT change the dates. When my boyfriend and I checked in we were told that our room was not ready because we were a day early. When I explained that I spoke to a rude woman who hung up on me, the desk clerk said, "Oh, you talked to the owner. It is what it is." No apology for the inconvenience, and the woman proceeded to tell us to "Come back in an hour". I believe we lucked out the first time we stayed here, and saw the Mansions truly terrible customer service record at our most recent visit. Overall, I paid $800 to stay a few nights in a museum run by a few crochety old maids. I will stay somewhere else next year.

Excellent bed and breakfast. All of the staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Beautiful and spacious rooms. Excellent food and service. I have a gluten allergy and they were more than accommodating to me. My boyfriend inquired about how they would manage my allergy for the breakfasts when booking and when we had arrived there was gluten-free peanut butter cookies (and tasted delicious!) and chocolate covered strawberries waiting in the room. The following morning they had gluten-free pancakes to offer me too. The woman he booked with remembered his name and the conversation they had and we bumped into her before starting the her shift entering the mansion... And the booking was 3 weeks prior. There is nothing to complain about The Southern Mansion. We highly recommend it for couples wanting a nice getaway.

Delicious breakfasts, gorgeous property, rooms are clean and beautiful, very comfortable King size bed, service was very friendly and attentive. Got a decent discount for booking 6 nights well in advance. Not being from Cape May, we misunderstood the website to read that the Mansion is surrounded by vineyards of Willow Creek Winery. Its actually packed in somewhat tightly between every other B&B, but still very pretty landscaping around it (same owner as willow creek). Very short drive down to the beach and restaurants (or long walk), perfect place to stay for a romantic getaway!

While visiting family in New Jersey my wife and I decided to go to Cape May. We were lucky enough to get a reservation at the Southern Mansion. The building and grounds are unbelievable, fantastic rooms, we stayed in room 18 which was one of the nicest rooms I have ever stayed in. All the employees are friendly and helpful. The breakfast was great. Our only regret was we were unable to stay longer. If you go make sure you book a long enough stay. We will definitely be back the next time we come up to New Jersey. Thank you for a wonderful experience.

I love this place, but its losing its charm. If you walk along the edge of the grass, there are plastic tarps behind the trees. The beautiful living room in this historic mansion has a corner filled with beach chairs. Also, if you are ten minutes past checkout on a Sunday in the Winter, they will call your room, then they will call the housekeeper until they see that you are leaving.

Went here for a wedding, it is a very interesting place. It is huge (thanks to some add-ons). It has a post-victorian vibe. For a shore property, there is a lot of lawn/land to walk around. Be warned, unless you are a guest, parking in the general area is very limited (even in off season).
